Those suffering from the fire crisis in Ocean County are not at fault and should not bear the burden of the recovery. While Governor Murphy is on vacation, Ocean County is trying to contain a wildfire that threatens to reach the level of the Los Angeles tragedy. New Jerseyans of all types and stripes, and of all political backgrounds, must put aside our differences and unite to bring the full force of municipal, county, state, and civil society resources to fight the fire currently burning over 15,000 acres. At the time of this writing, over 5,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate, 25,000 homes have lost power, and as of Thursday evening the fire is only 50% contained. If more is not done – if firefighting resources are not rushed from the state and every other level, then the blaze may expand to threaten tens of thousands of acres and hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans.

Managing this crisis requires staging and preparation from the National Guard and bringing in federal resources BEFORE it becomes even more devastating. Does the State of New Jersey, with its National Guard, intend to stand by until the fire is contained and thousands more displaced? Why does the displaced public have to evacuate and live at their own cost over a fire not caused by them? We have all seen what slow government response did to Los Angeles and the snail-paced rebuilding that is occurring now. We cannot let the same happen to a huge chunk of our state. We call on our National Guard to be mobilized to provide security for infrastructure and set up command and control for the recovery after this fire is finally beaten. We can’t let the valiant firefighters defend against this alone, nor can we fecklessly place the burden of recovery on the local county and townships. Where is Governor Murphy and the state government?

We must act now. Too many hard working middle and working class New Jerseyans may lose their homes, livelihoods, and the value they have in their property like what happened in LA. Whether Republican, Independent, or Democrat, gay or straight, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, or Jewish – we are New Jersey and we must act now to fight the fires and save south Jersey from burning. As a state we need to provide real assistance to those who’ve lost so much and make sure no more is lost to this fire.

  1. Any updates on this?? I live in Voorhees and am concerned bec a warning for elevated risk of wildfires was given today by the NJ Forest fire service for our county and surrounding counties. This is ridiculous that nothing is being done. This is looking like the next CA.

    1. Elevated Risk for the Spread of Wildfires – Sunday, April 27
US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly has issued a Special Weather Statement for the elevated risk for the spread of wildfires in the following New Jersey counties: Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem.
      ❗️SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT:
There is an increased risk for rapid fire spread this afternoon across portions of southern New Jersey. Minimum relative humidity values will be around 30 to 35 percent combined with northwest winds 15 to 20 mph with 30 to 40 mph gusts. These conditions, along with the continued drying of fine fuels, could support the rapid spread of any fires that ignite, which could quickly become difficult to control. Winds will diminish fairly rapidly by early this evening.
