Ridgewood NJ, yesterday, Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus lander, marking the first-ever commercial spacecraft to land on the moon, ceased transmitting, prematurely concluding its mission several days ahead of schedule. While the historic endeavor successfully returned US spacecraft to the moon following a 50-year hiatus, it encountered setbacks as it tipped onto its side during landing near the lunar south pole last week.

Analysts speculate that one of the legs of the hexagonal, 14-foot-tall lander may have snagged the surface, causing it to tilt while descending diagonally, thereby misaligning its antennas and solar arrays. Despite these challenges, the craft managed to deliver some scientific data payloads and capture an image of itself during descent. However, the status of results from various instruments aboard the craft remains uncertain, and as of the latest update, an ejectable camera had not been deployed.

This mission forms part of a broader initiative involving NASA-funded commercial lunar projects undertaken by private companies, all serving as preparatory endeavors for the Artemis mission aimed at returning humans to the moon.

  2. Everyone knows the key to having a successful moon landing is to bring as much golf equipment as possible. If the lander had been properly balanced with a golf cart and a six iron Odysseus would still be standing today.

  4. “successfully returned US spacecraft to the moon “. I see this text in every article I read.

Landing or falling onto its side is not a successful landing. It is sugar coating failure.
