Paterson, New Jersey (My9NJ) –

In Paterson, New Jersey only 19 kids who took the SAT’s are considered college ready. This means that they scored at least a 1500 out of 2400 on the standardized test, and this number is truly shocking considering how large the school district is.

Paterson resident Jason Williams is one of the lucky ones. He just graduated high school last year and has been enrolled in college since September, after taking the SAT’s three times determined to score over 1500. He says that the key to his success was not falling victim to the streets.

“Just last summer, my friend and teammate, he was shot and killed that summer and that really affected me,” he said.

  1. This is truly shocking and amazing at the same time considering how many students are enrolled in the school system.

  2. This is a shame. The system has to be fixed.

  3. Most pertinent thing to note is the last line in the linked article

“However, the Paterson school district said that they no longer use SAT scores to gauge students’ success.”

    Say no more.

  4. And it has absolutely NOTHING to do with lack of funding. That myth, frequently perpetrated by teachers unions and the left in general, has been scientifically busted many times. The reason for this shocking statistic is all based upon a cultural approach to education and life in general.

And what part of “the system” do you think is broken?

  6. No SAT score then what do Paterson schools use to gauge whether or not they are college ready?

  7. Many colleges do not require SAT anymore.

They also love diversity regardless of grades.

Daughter’s frosh roomie had good HS grades from NYC public schools and low standardized tests. Full ride. Daughter had good grades and good standardized tests and no $$. NYC student struggled.

  8. 19 out of how many ?

The only requirement for a High school diploma in Paterson is attendance.
    Grades do not matter.
Its an “Abbot district’, created by the left wing NJ State Supreme court.
This article is proof positive that throwing money at Paterson doesn’t work.
Btw, notice the article in today’s Record about the large number of school system employees earning over 6 figures?
Unlike Ridgewood, the property taxes do not support the schools in Paterson. YOU DO as the district is funded by the state.

  10. #9 – yep, I saw that…a half dozen with salaries in excess of $125K.

If you’re there 30+ years and you are contributing then I’m okay with salaries that get that high….

  11. Hands Up – Don’t Learn
