Ridgewood NJ, did someone lose a pig in the Willard area? There was a pig walking down Hillcrest Road in Ridgewood .

Yes, people do have pet pigs. Pet pigs, often referred to as “mini pigs” or “teacup pigs,” have become increasingly popular as companion animals in some parts of the world. These pigs are typically smaller breeds or selectively bred to be smaller than traditional farm pigs. However, it’s important to note a few key points about pet pigs:

  1. Size: While they are smaller than farm pigs, pet pigs can still grow larger than many people expect. Some may reach sizes of 100 pounds or more, depending on the breed and individual genetics. Therefore, it’s crucial to research the specific breed and consult with experienced breeders to understand the potential size of the pig you’re considering.
  2. Care and Housing: Pet pigs require proper care, nutrition, and housing, just like any other pet. They need access to a suitable outdoor space and proper shelter, and their dietary needs should be met to keep them healthy.
  3. Social Animals: Pigs are social animals and thrive on social interaction. They can become lonely and stressed if kept alone, so it’s often recommended to have at least two pigs or provide them with ample socialization and stimulation.
  4. Regulations: The legality of keeping pet pigs varies by location. Some areas have zoning laws and restrictions on pig ownership, so it’s essential to check with your local authorities and ensure that you can legally keep a pet pig in your area.
  5. Lifespan: Pigs can live for 15 years or more, so potential owners should be prepared for a long-term commitment.
  6. Training: Pigs can be trained to some extent, but they also have strong instincts, and owners need to be patient and consistent in their training efforts.

Before getting a pet pig, it’s crucial to research their care requirements thoroughly, consider the potential challenges, and make sure you are ready for the responsibilities of pig ownership. Additionally, adopting a pig from a reputable rescue organization or breeder is essential to ensure the pig has been properly cared for and socialized.

  1. I could say something about our municipal government, but I will restrain myself. Good for the lil piggy that she founds her way all the way home.
