Teaneck NJ, a Paterson man faces serious charges after fleeing a police traffic stop in Teaneck and subsequently striking a teenage girl, according to Teaneck police.

On April 16, at approximately 4:49 p.m., Teaneck Police Officer Kyle Rosen observed a gray BMW committing multiple traffic violations on Palisade Avenue near Votee Park. Officer Rosen initiated a traffic stop, but the situation quickly escalated.

“The vehicle initially pulled over,” stated Chief Andrew McGurr in a release. “However, as Officer Rosen approached on foot to engage the driver, the vehicle fled southbound at a high rate of speed.” Despite the driver’s attempt to evade, Officer Rosen refrained from pursuing the vehicle, instead promptly notifying headquarters with the vehicle’s description and direction of travel.

Shortly after, Officer Rosen encountered a pedestrian who had been the victim of a hit-and-run at the intersection of Palisade Avenue and Dewey Place. The 18-year-old female resident of Teaneck was struck while walking on the sidewalk near Dewey Place. She received immediate medical attention from members of the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps and was subsequently transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Through diligent investigative work and surveillance footage, police identified and arrested 32-year-old Michael Hammond in Saddle Brook. Hammond has been charged with aggravated assault, eluding, and assault by auto.

Hammond is currently held at the Bergen County Jail, awaiting a court appearance. This incident underscores the dangers of fleeing law enforcement and the severe consequences that can follow such reckless actions.
