Rivervale NJ, since so many in the media are so woefully ignorant on New Jersey gun laws , Assemblywomen Holly Schepisi gave us the run down on what the rules actually are .
In a Facebook post the Assemblywomen explains , “As I know it is a huge discussion and people oftentimes are unaware of their own state’s laws and requirements, New Jersey has the third strictest gun laws in the nation. It is illegal to own or operate certain AR-15 or similar types of weapon in the State of New Jersey. Bump Stocks are also illegal to own or use. Here are the other requirements in order to own or operate a gun within our state.
Among other things, New Jersey:
Requires permits for the purchase of any handgun, as well as a separate permit for persons purchasing long guns, both requiring a lengthy background check prior to issuance (which oftentimes takes longer than several months);
Provides law enforcement discretion when issuing permits to carry concealed weapons (and it is almost impossible to secure such a permit unless you prove that you are in imminent danger);
Prohibits the purchase or possession of a firearm by persons convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence offenses, and by persons subject to protective orders;
Requires the licensing of all firearms dealers and their employees;
Limits the number of handguns that may be purchased to one per month;
Imposes a 7-day waiting period prior to the physical transfer of a handgun;
Will require the sale of personalized handguns once such technology is available for retail sale;
Prohibits the possession and transfer of assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines;
Requires firearm owners to report the loss or theft of their firearms; and
Requires all firearms dealers and ammunition sellers to maintain records of all acquisitions and dispositions of firearms and ammunition.”
Acoustical gunshot detectors have been installed in Paterson.
Wrong on so many levels…
First off, it does not take “months” to get a permit. The check system has come a long way the last few years. Last permit I got took a week.
Completely uninformed with regards to “typing” the AR.
The civilian model is very much legal in NJ. Full auto is NOT. For any long rifle. The judiciary has the final say on carry permits not law enforcement. Local PD’s shuffle the papers and send it to the court who in turn promptly reject the application imminent danger or not. You’ll have to wait until your dead. Then it gets reviewed. Magazine capacity is a joke as well. Nothing a little duct tape wrapped around 2 10 round clips can’t fix. All this for LEGAL law abiding citizens of the state. Besides, once HR 38 passes the senate all NJ carry laws are moot regardless of what the Murph will tell you. I have a right under the second amendment of the constitution and the responsibility as a husband and a father to protect myself and my family and no politico in Trenton surrounded by armed state police officers is going to tell me otherwise. Govern yourselfs accordingly.
No honest law abiding citizen will ever get a permit to carry in new jerkey
Only recently a few years ago was a law passed allowing retiring Cops to carry.
All of the new bs proposed by Murphy such as lower capacity magazines will make honest law abiding citizens who legally purchased theirs now subject to criminal penalties. He better grandfather those of us who played by the rules when we jumped through hoops to legally buy a 15 round pistol to protect our homes from criminals.
In nj the sale of ammo is recorded which is pointless. in ny it is not.
How come there is no following of the trail of ownership of guns used in crimes in Paterson Camden and Newark?
Because it would reveal tha these scumbags never bought guns here legally and it doesn’t fit the liberal narrative that all gun owners and the NRA are bad. It’s a fact, legal gun owners are not the problem.
Maybe it’s time to get the federal govt to come to nnj and take over any case with a firearm and put the criminal in jail for 20 years since the local state courts plead it down to another crime with less jail time.
All absolutely on point 7:45…what I do not agree with is the retired cop getting to carry after retirement. What makes them do special?
It all goes back to being one of the select few who can skirt the law by using your influence. In this case the PBA Union. I have just as much a right as the next guy to CC and National Reciprocity will finally put an end to NJ’s draconian gun laws that arm the criminals and leave law abiding citizens at their mercy.
