Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Crew Team hosted its annual Row-a-Thon this past Saturday, witnessing an exhilarating race between local police and firefighters, showcasing community spirit and athletic prowess.

The event, held at Van Neste Square from 10 am to 1 pm, was a thrilling success. Representing the Ridgewood Police Department, Officers James Bigos and Francisco Santiago notably secured 2nd and 3rd places in the first responder 1000m race, demonstrating their rowing skills and competitive spirit. In the 1500m relay, teams led by Officers James Bigos and Doug Christopher took home first and third places, respectively.

Highlighting the friendly competition, and representing the Ridgewood Fire Department, firefighter Brendan Corcoran clinched victory in the 1000m race, adding to the day’s excitement and camaraderie among first responders.

Officer Bigos not only brought home gold for the Police Department, but was also a former rower under Coach Boris. His journey from team member to a community leader exemplifies the life-changing impact of rowing, and its ability to develop discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills in rowers that transcend the water.

Ridgewood Crew head coach, Boris Roque-Alvarez shared his thoughts on the day: “Seeing the community come together, with individuals like Officer Bigos leading by example, truly encapsulates the spirit of rowing. It’s about more than just physical strength; it’s about building character and community.”

The Row-a-Thon was not just for the seasoned rowers; children and adults alike had the opportunity to try out rowing machines (ergs), experiencing the fun and challenge of rowing firsthand. This interactive element added an engaging layer to the event, promoting rowing’s accessibility and appeal to a wider audience.

In addition to the races, the event also promoted the “Learn to Row” summer program, inviting Ridgewood Public School students in grades 6 – 11 to experience rowing on the Passaic River. This program is part of Ridgewood Crew’s ongoing effort to introduce young athletes to the sport, nurturing future generations of rowers.

In the program’s 20-year history, Ridgewood Crew rowers have competed and excelled in both national and international competitions and its athletes have attracted interest from top rowing colleges and universities around the country. Ridgewood Crew offers several ways for you to experience our mission:  join the team, volunteer, or donate. Student athlete programs begin with Learn-To-Row for middle schoolers.
