Ridgewood NJ, during the public comment section of the Ridgewood Board of Education meeting on October 2nd a concerned parent brought up the fact the the School district has a policy to not publish class ranking or at least tell seniors their rank which are often necessary for use to access merit scholarships .
The district has gone so woke that not even the valedictorian is allowed to speak at the Ridgewood High School graduation . This often subject spectators to horrible guest speakers , administrators and teachers droning on and on . Valedictorians speaking at graduation is long standing tradition throughout the world and recognizes academic excellence. Academic excellence for students is the core notion behind education.
“Tradition of Excellence”, it seems like so many things in the Village of Ridgewood these days is just that its a tradition with no substance.

Just absurd the Valedictorian and Salutatorian aren’t celebrated and both should have an opportunity to speak at graduation. At grad ceremony RHS calls out every student who has earned straight A’s. Let the Salutatorian make this announcement and the Valedictorian give a brief speech.
The Student Council President and the Senior Class President speak. No Valedictorian or Salutatorian named or recognized. This has been the tradition for at least forty years according to this commenter’s recollection. Others may remember from further back. So it’s not a recent effeminate or “woke” thing. FWIW.

I wish that people would stop misappropriating and misusing the word “woke.” It came from the black culture over 100 years ago and means to be socially and politically aware.
On the other hand, the fact that Ridgewood High School, where my daughter graduated in 1996, no longer gives out class rankings is ridiculous. It is true that many students need that information for scholarships. The students, also, need it to help narrow down which colleges to apply and for their own self-awareness.
I grew-up in Severna Park, Maryland and had a Ridgewood quality education. At the end my ranking was not good; neither were my grades. I had majored in activities, rarely went to class and never did the schoolwork. I didn’t really care about it until the end, when I saw my ranking. That got my attention and made me realize what I had lost.
Years later, I went back to college earning all A’s. Both rankings, positive and negative, made a difference in my life. Why on Earth are the Ridgewood students denied that information about themselves? And, no, it has nothing to do with being “woke.”. But, it has everything to do with the students self-awareness.
As for the valedictorian and the salutatorian, why are they not honored for their hard work? Everyone in the high school knows who they are. They are the ones who work the hardest, get the best grades, usually contribute the most meaningful comments in class, ruin the grade curves, and in most cases are two of the most mature. Every teacher and every student knows who they are, so what is the point of not giving them the honors that they have earned. Some students don’t care, some students envy them, some students resent them, and some students find them inspirational…that is life!
What does the Ridgewood school district believe it is protecting the students from…life? Good luck with that one!
