Ridgewood NJ, on the morning of November 1, 2024, a Ridgewood, New Jersey resident was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers discovered a handgun in his carry-on luggage. The incident occurred in Terminal C at a TSA checkpoint when the man’s blue backpack, placed on the X-ray conveyor belt, revealed the firearm.
TSA officers swiftly alerted Port Authority Police, who confiscated the small handgun and detained the man for questioning. During the interrogation, he stated that he was carrying the weapon due to previous encounters as a crime victim. This is not an isolated incident at Newark Airport; earlier this month, a similar arrest took place when a man attempted to hide a disassembled firearm in a LEGO box.
The TSA emphasizes the importance of following strict regulations regarding firearms and prohibited items in carry-on bags, especially as travel restrictions around personal safety items have become more stringent in recent years.
