Ridgewood NJ, Three seats are up this November at the BOE, and three seats are up at the Village Council. If you, as a resident, are concerned about growing taxes in the village of Ridgewood, you need to step up and run for either the village council or the board of education.
As the local elections draw near, the community of Ridgewood anticipates the forthcoming decisions that will shape the future of education and governance in the area. With the Ridgewood Board of Education and Ridgewood Village Council elections on the horizon, three incumbent candidates stand poised for re-election to each respective body.
On the Village Council, Paul Vagianos, Pam Perron, and Lorraine Reynolds are up for re-election. During Paul Vagianos’s time on the council, Ridgewood has seen a tax increase of close to 18% for municipal taxes. It should also be noted that Paul hired his campaign manager from his assembly run as Village Manager, by adding a new role with recurring expenses of over 275K a year.
On the Board of Education, Sheila Brogan, Mohammed Mahmoud, and HyunJu Kwak are up for re-election. Interestingly, Sheila Brogan and Mohammed Mahmood also hold the positions of President and Vice President and hold position of the negotiations committee to negotiate union contracts. Ironically, both of them were supported and promoted by the union for each of their elections!
The only way for residents to put a check on increasing taxes is by stepping up, being vigilant, and participating in the process of democracy. As expected, neither the Village Council nor the Board of Education has published the details about these elections on their websites or public notices. Deadlines to file for the candidates are approaching in the month of June!

Sheila Brogan-No
Mohammed Mahmoud-No
HyunJu Kwak-No
Paul Vagianos-No
Pam Perron-No
Lorraine Reynolds-Yes
HyanJu Kwak – a definately YES!
Oh no, not you again…
Hyunju Kwak has used her business skills to generate surplus while increasing services to our students and staying under 2%! The surplus was then used for capital improvements. If it were for Sheila and Mahmoud, they would have given the farm to the unions!!
Hyunju Kwak would be amazing and I believe it is time for a radical shift in the way things are being done and the radical spending without proper oversight. Also, we need to keey Lorraine Reynolds. The rest of the bunch can be “managed” if we have a strong Mayor and kick the majority voting block to the curb because they will hurt Ridgewood in the long run with a mayor who only cares about sports and the CBD. Only last year a furlough was on the table when monies where bucketed for special interest groups and this is just wrong.
Kwak is the worst thing that ever happened to Ridgewood. Open your eyes. She’s a bully and an idiot. She won’t dare run again because she’s going to be embarrassed. She’s done nothing except cause issues with her time on the board. Plus her kids don’t go to Ridgewood schools…
Kwak and Dani are the only board members who can add and the teachers unions hates that
Kids not going to school is a plus!
She addressed the reason her kids don’t go to RPS multiple times. Were you not listening? We have other members without kids in RPS, do we not?
Anti Kwak people re just bigots who can’t bear to see an Asian not doing their laundry
She is very sart and is a natural born leader. She always asks the right questions to get to the truth and puts her energy into doing the right thing, unlike present day bunch except for Lorraine. Would be good for Keith to see how things should be done to bring about the right kind of change Ridgewood needs.
now that the teachers union has taken over the school system , better to see educational opportunities else where
As an empty nester, I appreciate Kwak and Dani’s diligence in keeping the school budget increases as low as possible while still ensuring a quality education. My investment on this town is largely based on our good schools. When I go to sell, I have a vested interest in having the same great schools as when I purchased 35 year ago. With that said, if you increase my school taxes too much, I am going to have to sell and I guarantee you, a family with a few kids will be moving in to my place. RPS needs empty nester to support the system….drive us out and we are all screwed.
Who in their right mind would run for any of these slots? The negativity, hatred, and vitriol never ends.
service to the community , not self-serving money making
