Ridgewood NJ,  if you’re a resident of the Village of Ridgewood, there are now new rules for feeding wildlife—and they apply to both public and private property.

The Ridgewood Village Council recently adopted an ordinance expanding restrictions on wildlife feeding due to growing public health and safety concerns. The new law aims to minimize human and pet exposure to diseases like rabies, bird flu, and Lyme disease, often spread through contact with deer, raccoons, and bears.

What the New Wildlife Feeding Rules Say

Under the new regulation, residents are prohibited from intentionally or unintentionally feeding wildlife in Ridgewood. This includes leaving food outside that may attract animals.

Bird Feeders Allowed—With Restrictions

There is an exception for bird feeders, but residents must comply with the following:

  • Feeders must be at least six feet off the ground.

  • Feeders must have a structure that prevents seeds or food from falling onto the ground.

  • Homes are limited to no more than three feeders per property.

Why Ridgewood Took Action

The Ridgewood Council passed the ordinance in response to:

  • Growing deer populations, which increase the risk of tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease.

  • Recent bear and raccoon sightings in residential areas.

  • The need to curb the spread of zoonotic diseases that could affect both humans and pets.

Village Manager Keith Kazmark said public feedback played a key role in the council’s decision. Community education campaigns are currently underway to inform residents about the changes and promote responsible feeding practices.

Statewide Legislation Could Be Next

The New Jersey Legislature is currently considering a statewide proposal that could further regulate wildlife feeding and potentially increase the height requirement for bird feeders.

Our question is who is seriously going to enforce this insanity?  Progressives in NJ are more worried about fining you up to $1,000 about your bird feeders, than kicking out illegals that cost us $7 Billion a year.

  1. Is Mortimer behind this?

    1. I think Pam Perron promoted this.

  2. Says the VOR HOA. Will achieve nothing.

  3. Deer eating shrubs is unintentional. Does this mean new plantings are banned and removal of existing is required to avoid being fined?

  4. Do I have to take out my vegetable garden?

  5. As a disabled senior I will not be able to maintain over that height and will have to remove my bird feeders. It was one of the few remaining things that brought me some joy.

  6. Where is Mortimer with No Mow May? If this guy even tries that this year people are going to be pissed. Homeowners who lost their signs got fined.
