Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Police Department has received multiple reports of suspicious phone calls received by residents from 201-652-3900 (our non-emergency line). The caller claims to be a member of our department. They claim the call recipient has an arrest warrant and demand payment. THIS IS A SCAM. Hang up and do not give any personal information. The Ridgewood Police Department NEVER calls to demand money over the phone for outstanding tickets or warrants.

Please tell your less computer savvy friends/neighbors/loved ones about this scam. A good friend of mine had her mother fall for a similar scam that started on the computer and continued over the phone. She withdrew $25,000 from the bank and managed to buy bitcoin for the scammer. Even the bank tried to stop her but she was so adamant about believing that she really owed the money. They threatened harm against her family (and knew family members names) if she told anyone. This is extortion, the scammers knew exactly what to say and do to get to this 80 year old woman. Please share with everyone you care about that no one should ask you for money over the computer or telephone.
