Ridgewood NJ, As students return to school, the Ridgewood Police Department continues to remind residents to drive carefully and stay alert to ensure the safety of children. With more kids walking and biking to and from school, it’s critical that drivers reduce speed and stay focused to react to changing conditions.

Here are some important safety tips from Ridgewood Police to keep in mind as the school year gets underway:

1. Slow Down and Stay Alert
Drivers should reduce their speed and stay aware of their surroundings, especially in school zones. Avoid distractions to ensure enough time to react to children crossing streets or riding bikes.

2. Follow Traffic Laws and Set a Good Example
Be mindful of speed limits and avoid blocking intersections and crosswalks. Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks, and when walking with children, cross at designated areas to teach them good habits.

3. Heed Crossing Guards
Always stop when instructed by crossing guards and encourage children to follow their guidance as well. Their role is to ensure safe crossings, so stay patient and attentive.

4. Watch for School Buses
Never pass a stopped school bus while it is loading or unloading students. Look for flashing lights and the extended stop arm. Traffic in both directions must stop, even on divided roads.

5. Be Patient and Consider Walking
If you experience delays during school hours, remember to stay calm. Walking or biking with your child to school is a great way to avoid traffic and promote safety.

Let’s all work together to make sure our students arrive at school safely every day. Slow down, stay patient, and keep your eyes on the road—welcome back to school, Ridgewood!

  1. Ugh, I’m already so over it. I can’t wait for the season to end so I can go back to driving like a reckless, distracted jerk. Remember, if I pretend not to see you, you’re not really there.

  2. And I hope the police ticket the speeders

  3. Good luck with police ticketing. A cop told me they don’t have the time to ticket every speeder!

    1. I know. They’re soooooooooooooooooo busy holding that thin blue line keeping Ridgewood safe from the small time crooks, to the cartels, to the Bond-level villains poisoning the water supply and the … heeeey wait a minute!
