Ridgewood NJ, in response to a formal recommendation made by members of the Village’s Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA), the Ridgewood Village Council will soon introduce an ordinance that will prohibit the installation of fences in residential front yards. One exception will allow fences to be installed in front yards of corner located properties.

Additionally, and also in response to a ZBA recommendation, Council members will introduce a separate ordinance that will limit the construction of circular driveways to properties with front yard widths of 100 linear feet or more.

Council member elect Frank Mortimer publicly pitched his plea that fences in front yards should be allowed in cases where families have small children.

  1. This surprises me. In my neighborhood alone I am seeing new construction and major renovations that include MULTIPLE STRUCTURES on lots that are .45-.49. Pool houses are now the rage along with rebuilding detached garages. I am seeing lot coverage that appears to exceed the allowable amounts. It used to be so difficult in Ridgewood to get permits and permits were followed up on… is this still happening? Does anyone from VOR show up and make sure the ongoing construction is according to the site plan and are site plans really being submitted? Feels hard to believe lately.

    1. yes I see garages being turned into mini houses. I thought everyone had to have a garage

  2. Ridiculous proposal
So instead of allowing a homeowner to install a 3 foot fence, homeowners will offset by planting 6 ft trees

    1. 100%

      This is America

    2. I’ll build a moat around my house and stock it with trout and fish when I damn well please without a license thank you very much because this is America 100%

  4. That we have to codify prohibition of front yard fences shows how the town is changing. Front yard fences belong in cities, they do not belong in the suburbs on small lots.

    1. If u look at the fences in town, they add to the curb appeal. It’s not as if residents are barricading their houses w 6 ft chain link fences. Perfect example of left wing government overreach and a prime reason Trump won.

      1. Get over your TDS.

Maybe cuddle up with your Ridgewood for Harris t-shirt and a box of Zinfandel and maybe a valium.

        It will be alright honey.

      2. I hear Trump is making the Mexicans pay for all the new fences in town.

  5. What precipitated the ZBA’s “no front yard fence” recommendation?

    1. City folk moving into town, cutting down trees and putting up massive fences.

      1. You mean the town council? Looking to cut down hundreds of trees to replace a synthetic baseball field surrounded by a fence.

      2. Say the liberal elites who got crushed on Tuesday. You need a day off from work to cope? Get ready change is coming.

  6. I wish they would have prohibited the tacky plastic white fences. So cheap looking and they get nasty looking after the first few years.

    1. My neighbors put up an ugly plastic fence that I have to look at, but they don’t. It’s all green mold and slime. And the little triangular caps at the top of the faux pickets are breaking and falling off.

  7. We do not want most types of fences in front yards. It makes the two look crappy. They are ugly.

    1. They say never judge a book by its cover, but there are times when it’s appropriate.

  8. The liberals on the loose again…thought they got the message on Tuesday night…

    1. They just dont get it

  9. Interesting because I just drove past a house half a block from me with a new front-yard fence that I did not like the looks of. Very unwelcoming. I guess they just made it before the new rule.

    1. Are you in the habit of mentally inviting yourself over to strangers’ houses? Mind your own damn business.

  10. The quality of these discussions and comments is very unfortunate. A bit like middle school nonsense.
