Paramus NJ, the borough of Paramus has approved senior and assisted living housing for the Joy’s Farm site in Paramus on Pascack Road, one of the first development projects following an ordinance that deemed some nurseries in town in need of rehabilitation.

The senior housing project was possible due to a 2019 ordinance that designated certain nurseries in town as areas in need of rehabilitation. Eisele’s Nursery, Denny Wiggers Garden Center, a lot on the former location of Tree Land Nursery and a vacant lot near Parkway Elementary School were designated in this zone along with  Joy’s Farm.

Declaring an area in need of rehabilitation does not permit a municipality to force a property owner to move or yield the property through eminent domain.

The borough’s Planning Board approved a four-building application, which includes a Brightview assisted living facility, by JK Farm & Realty, LLC earlier this month.

The project will house 162 units for senior age-restricted housing, and will offer a clubhouse and swimming pool for those 55 and older, in three of the buildings. The Brightview assisted living building, on the north side of the property, will have 170 units.

Stuart Liebman, an attorney for the applicant, said on Wednesday that the number of affordable housing units that would go on the site is still being determined, but would be dispersed between the assisted living facility and the senior housing.

  1. Go ahead Paramus. Get rid of Eisele’s and Denny Wiggers and anything else you feel needs rehabbing. ( Just being sarcastic.) By the way, why doesn’t Victoria’s need rehabbing too? That property would be a perfect place for housing. Makes you wonder.

    1. …of* open area…

  4. The farm stand on Ridgewood Ave near the Duck pond will be a 15000 square foot CVS with an drive thru. There will also be a “restaurant” on that lot. Across the street will be a 24/7 7-11. Freaking Paramus.

      1. You know it’s funny people complain about everything it’s too hot it’s too cold etc etc sure I don’t like to see it go but nothing lasts forever and what I’m trying to point out is people complaining about these properties don’t realize how much maintenance and time and money it cakes to keep up with large amounts of property like these you just don’t let it sit and do nothing And taxes are another thing but the manpower and maintenance alone as well as money is another thing everyone thinks it’s just there for them to look at but they don’t keep in consideration other things and what’s worse is if this property belong to them they wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about selling it or doing what they want with it it’s not about money all the time ! Everybody thinks it’s so damn easy and it’s no problem taking care of large amounts of land and if you didn’t they’d be the first ones complaining about it also a lot of them are just jealous because they think somebody’s getting rich on it and they aren’t so therefore they bitch and complain

    2. Less taxes. Should be happy.

      1. Less taxes, maybe. More traffic congestion, definitely. Route 17 alone on a weekday is already insane and yet town officials and developers keep wanting to shove more building down our throats.

  5. They are ruining all these little towns can you imagine another 2 to 5 years it’s gonna be chaos with the traffic, you have to move out of the area

  6. Yeah it’s a shame but honestly if you own that property what would you do with it after having it all those years it’s a lot of work maintaining it and a lot of cost to have it and keep it people don’t realize these things they like to point the finger at the next person or the person that owns it thinking and getting jealous that making all this money and that’s the only reason they’re doing it there’s a lot more reasons and a lot more involved than people know or want to know most of them don’t like this stuff because they’re jealous and they don’t like seeing people or think someone’s making money and they’re not they don’t even give a shit about the town they just don’t want someone else making money or trying to and they’re not able to they would sell that property themselves in a blink of an eye if they were offered money and we’re going to get a lot for it there are a bunch of hypocrites and they don’t realize or know anything that’s involved in having land that big they think it just sits there by itself and takes care of itself well it doesn’t look at the garden State parkway they basically took that land you got nothing for it or you got close to nothing for it that could happen with land that you own also yes it’s a shame but you can’t keep things forever sometimes and you don’t get any younger but there’s a lot of work and money involved in having land like that believe me I know doesn’t just pay for itself and sit there unattended

  8. Why is everyone so anti-business here?

    1. I’m not anti business. If these businesses couldn’t continue as garden centers then the owners should make their own business decisions about what to do with their land.
This article implies Paramus decided the land use had to change.

As a home gardener I’m sorry I can’t support these locals anymore. Lowe’s and other big chains don’t keep the money I give them in the local economy in the way these smaller businesses did.

  9. I’m so disappointed! Moved to this area years ago and felt like it was the country esp with all the nurseries and farms. Nothing special anymore! That’s just terrible. I hate to see Joys go. I loved shopping there for my plants.
