Sheraton Crossroads Hotel Implosion Rescheduled to May 10

Mahwah NJ,  the planned implosion of the iconic Sheraton Crossroads Hotel has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 10 at 7:30 a.m., township officials confirmed Monday.

Originally slated for Sunday, April 27 at 8 a.m., the demolition was postponed without an official reason given. Township officials assure residents that the new time will minimize disruptions and avoid traffic issues, as most retail businesses in the area will still be closed at that early hour.

Traffic and Safety Measures in Place

The demolition will require the temporary closure of Routes 17 and 287, key roadways near the site, to prevent driver distractions during the implosion.

Business Administrator Ben Kezmarsky noted that no traffic delays are expected due to the early morning timing. Coordination is underway between various agencies, including:

  • Township administration

  • Police and fire departments

  • Emergency medical services

  • Building and engineering departments

Final oversight on the handling of explosives falls under the New Jersey Department of Labor, which has jurisdiction over such matters in the state.

Safety Preparations Completed

Township Engineer Michael Kelly confirmed that extensive preparations have been made to ensure the safe demolition of the 25-story, 250-foot-tall structure, which closed its doors in December 2023 after nearly four decades in operation.

Key safety steps included:

  • Full interior gutting of the building

  • Complete asbestos removal

  • Testing of concrete materials, which were found to be non-hazardous

Future of the Crossroads Site Still Unclear

While the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel is set to come down, the future of the 140-acre site remains undetermined.

Last August, the Mahwah Township Council approved a proposal by Crossroads Hotel Developers LLC to increase the maximum allowable building square footage from 1.7 million to 4 million square feet. However, no formal redevelopment plan has been submitted as of yet.

What’s Next?

With the implosion now just weeks away, all eyes are on what’s next for one of Mahwah’s most recognizable landmarks. The site presents a major opportunity for redevelopment, but the community will be watching closely to ensure smart planning and sustainable growth.

  1. Actually, there was an official reason given. The demolition contractor had a scheduling conflict.

  2. Get ready for more housing.
