Teaneck NJ, the Teaneck Fire Department 4th platoon responded to solar panel fire earlier this week. Companies were able to isolate the panel and extinguish it. There was minor damage to the roof and no extension to the interior.
Solar panel roof fires pose unique challenges and considerations, but they are not necessarily more dangerous than other types of roof fires. Here are some factors to consider:
- Electrical Hazards: Solar panels generate electricity, so there is a risk of electrical shock or arc flash during a fire. Firefighters need to be aware of the presence of live electrical currents and take appropriate precautions.
- Access: Solar panels can obstruct access to the roof surface, making it more difficult for firefighters to ventilate the fire and apply water directly to the burning area.
- Ventilation: Solar panels can trap heat and smoke, potentially intensifying the fire and creating hazardous conditions for firefighters.
- Fire Spread: Solar panels can act as a barrier to firefighting efforts, preventing water from reaching the underlying roof materials and allowing the fire to spread laterally.
- Material Considerations: The materials used in solar panels (e.g., tempered glass, aluminum frames) may affect fire behavior and firefighter tactics. For example, tempered glass can shatter under thermal stress, creating additional hazards for responders.
However, it’s important to note that proper installation, maintenance, and adherence to safety standards can mitigate many of these risks. Additionally, firefighters are trained to adapt their tactics to address the specific challenges posed by solar panel roof fires. Overall, while solar panel roof fires require careful management, they are not inherently more dangerous than other types of roof fires when appropriate safety measures are followed.

Brave New World
Some insurance companies won’t even write a policy for a building with solar panels for the very reasons mentioned in the article.
