Ridgewood NJ, the beloved rescue squirrel Peanut, who captured the hearts of over half a million Instagram fans, has passed away, leaving many heartbroken after New York authorities seized and euthanized him last week. The squirrel’s owner, Mark Longo, had cared for Peanut for seven years, but keeping a wild animal as a pet is illegal in New York. Despite an online petition amassing over 50,000 signatures in support of Peanut, the authorities ultimately moved forward with their decision.
Peanut’s story has even attracted the attention of high-profile figures, with Elon Musk and Joe Rogan expressing their dismay. Musk appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Monday, where he passionately condemned the situation, questioning how a government could “barge into your home, seize your pets, and euthanize them.”
Longo first took Peanut in after finding him injured following a car accident. Peanut, who had once been released into the wild, came back to live with Longo permanently after surviving a brutal animal attack. The duo had amassed a loyal following on TikTok and Instagram, with fans eagerly following Peanut’s antics and adorable videos.
Rogan echoed Musk’s frustration on the podcast, saying, “Why would you kill that cute little squirrel who was clearly a pet?” He praised Longo’s bond with Peanut, calling it “wonderful” and “really cute.” During the raid, however, Peanut reportedly bit an investigator, leading authorities to euthanize him to test for rabies.
Musk took to social media over the weekend, rallying his followers with the slogan, “Vote For PNut! For Liberty! For Freedom!” He further urged listeners to take action by voting, claiming that cases like Peanut’s should encourage citizens to protect their rights and those of their pets.
“American tax dollars should not be used to kill innocent pets,” Musk said emphatically. “We’ve got to fight back against this.”
As the hashtag #JusticeForPeanut trends online, many are using the squirrel’s story to spark conversations about pet laws and freedoms. Musk’s rallying cry to “vote for Peanut” may be a rallying call for pet lovers and freedom advocates alike to mobilize and seek change.
