Around 9 a.m., a bus rear-ended a tractor-trailer, sending it crashing into the Route 3 barrier. According to Clifton Acting Fire Chief Daniel Collins, the impact caused the truck to burst into flames. Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes confirmed that the truck’s driver, a 55-year-old man from Linden, was killed in the fire. His name has not been released.

Fire officials noted that the truck had a placard indicating it contained corrosive and explosive materials. However, a spokesperson for Brenntag, the company that owns and operates the truck, clarified that it was transporting flammable but non-toxic materials.

The accident led to significant disruptions. All lanes on the eastbound side of Route 3 were closed near Route 46 in Clifton, as reported by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Clifton Police. As a precaution, nearby homes were evacuated to ensure the safety of residents.
