Ridgewood NJ, the long-standing issue of the abandoned Town Garage on Franklin Avenue is finally seeing progress, as the Village prepares to clean up and redevelop the property. Village Manager Keith Kazmark previously emphasized the importance of the Village buying the property, saying, “The issue has lingered for many years. In the next month or so, this eyesore will be removed from Franklin Avenue, and the property will be well on its way to being remediated.”

A site assessment was recently conducted at the Town Garage, marking the beginning of environmental cleanup efforts. The building’s demolition is expected to be completed within the next 30-45 days, bringing the Village closer to transforming the property into a more positive community space.

Kazmark was asked on Facebook if it was necessary to demolish the building ? In response Kazmark said, “after review by public works, Ridgewood Water and other departments it was determined there was no beneficial use to the Village. Our public works uses wouldn’t be appropriate for a main roadway and a corridor that we are trying to clean up and make more aesthetically pleasing.”

However, residents shouldn’t celebrate just yet. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) classified the site as a remediation zone back in 2006 due to environmental concerns. Over the years, little has been done, and there are still hydraulic lifts on the property and diesel fuel tanks buried beneath the property. To complicate matters, an underground water stream runs through the area and has been compromised by fuel seepage.

While this initial progress is promising, there is still much work to be done to ensure that the property is fully cleaned up and safe for future use. The Village is committed to moving forward with the necessary remediation, but it will be a gradual process requiring close coordination with environmental agencies.

  1. It’s about time that place is one big shit hole, and the parking lot next-door. What’s up with that? That thing needs to be reconstructed, it’s been a mess for 15 years.

    1. Who’s paying for this?

  2. this is so long overdue

  3. Hey, there is the guy leaning against the wall Quasimoto, yes master. I will make sure it doesn’t happen again. I know I’ve been a bad boy with handling the soil.☠️

  4. Do they know what they are putting there?

    1. Where do you get your information ??

#1- There have NEVER EVER been diesel fuel tanks on the Town Garage property.
#2- Although there is (or used to be) an small underground stream on the property, it would be literally impossible for it to be affected by fuel seepage since there hasn’t been any fuel stored on the site since the 1980’s. None. Zero.
PS- The soil contamination caused by the Village at the site of their former Garage is 100 times worse than anything they will ever find at 120 Franklin.

  5. A Go go bar.
