Protect Your Family from Pesky Mosquitoes with These Simple Tips

RIDGEWOOD, NJ – As summer heats up, so does mosquito activity. These tiny pests are more than just annoying—they can transmit diseases and ruin your time outdoors. But there’s good news: with the right preventive measures, you can significantly reduce your risk of getting bitten.
Dr. Galen Centeno, internal medicine specialist at JFK University Medical Center, shares 10 evidence-based ways to keep mosquitoes at bay and enjoy a more comfortable summer.
🦟 1. Avoid Mosquito “Prime Time”
Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. If you can, stay indoors during these hours to avoid bites.
💧 2. Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so regularly empty anything that collects water around your yard—birdbaths, gutters, planters, buckets, pool covers, and trash cans.
🧴 3. Use EPA-Approved Mosquito Repellent
Repellents containing DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective. “Always check the label and consult the EPA’s list of approved insect repellents,” says Dr. Centeno.
👶 4. Take Special Precautions with Children
Never use OLE or para-menthane diol on children under 3. Apply repellent to your hands first, then gently rub on the child’s exposed skin (avoiding hands, mouth, and eyes).
🪟 5. Install and Repair Screens
Window and door screens are your home’s first line of defense. Keep them in good repair and consider using air conditioning to stay cool instead of opening windows.
🌾 6. Keep Grass and Shrubs Trimmed
Mosquitoes love moist, shady areas. Keeping your lawn short and vegetation trimmed can help reduce their hiding spots.
🌬️ 7. Use Oscillating Fans Outdoors
Mosquitoes are weak fliers. “A fan can create enough wind to keep them from landing on you,” Dr. Centeno explains. Use one while sitting on your porch or deck.
👕 8. Cover Up with Long Clothing
Wear long sleeves and pants outdoors—especially in mosquito-heavy areas. Don’t spray repellent under your clothes.
🛏️ 9. Use Mosquito Nets
Protect babies in strollers and yourself when camping or sleeping outdoors with mosquito netting.
🧥 10. Try Permethrin-Treated Clothing
Clothing treated with 0.5% permethrin can both repel and kill mosquitoes. You can treat your own gear or buy pre-treated items.
🩹 What To Do If You Get Bitten
Despite your best efforts, bites happen. Here’s how to treat them:
-
Wash the bite with soap and water
-
Apply ice to reduce swelling
-
Use anti-itch creams or antihistamines
-
Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen if needed
-
Avoid scratching to prevent infection
Seek medical attention if you experience:
-
High fever
-
Severe headache
-
Body aches
-
Redness that spreads
Stay Safe & Bite-Free
“Mosquito bites are usually minor, but they can become serious if left untreated or if the mosquito is carrying a disease,” Dr. Centeno warns. Following these simple steps can go a long way in keeping you and your family safe, comfortable, and bite-free this season.

My house has a bat box…the bats live there.
Last summer they did an incredible job of eating bugs and mosquitoes.
