Paramus NJ, two Essex County teens out for a joyride in a stolen car with a pet parakeet led Paramus police on a chase down Route 17 to Hackensack early Thursday morning.
Paramus police announced the arrests of the two boys, one 14 from Newark and the other 16 from Bloomfield, who brought along his pet parakeet in a fanny pack, according to information from Paramus Chief Robert M. Guidetti.
The evening began in Upper Saddle River around 2 a.m. when police spotted a 2015 Hyundai Sonata that was reported stolen in Belleville on Wednesday. Paramus Police Officer Michael Mordaga saw the Sonata heading south on Route 17 and picked up the pursuit.
The teens ignored officer Mordaga’s attempt to pull them over and headed southbound on Route 17 and onto Route 80 before taking the Hudson Street exit in an effort to lose the police. The teens headed down Anderson Street when they reached a dead end behind an apartment complex, where they struck a parked vehicle.
Officers William Stallone and Mordaga apprehended the 14-year-old driver, while the 16-year-old took off on foot with his pet parakeet hiding in the fanny pack. He was caught within minutes by Officer Michael Focarino.
The younger boy was charged as a juvenile with possession of a stolen vehicle and eluding police and was given summonses for reckless, careless, unsafe driving and being an unlicensed driver. The older boy was charged with joyriding and resisting arrest.
“The juveniles and the parakeet were released to the driver’s mother,” Paramus Police Chief Guidetti said. No injuries were reported .
