East Rutherford NJ, the parents of 20-year-old Emilio Acosta are pleading for the public’s help as the search for their son enters its third month. Emilio, a University of Pittsburgh student and Weehawken native, vanished in the early hours of December 18, 2024, during a mental health crisis.

His family is now offering a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to his safe return.

The Disappearance: Last Known Movements

Emilio was last seen in the East Rutherford/Secaucus area. After leaving his family’s home in Weehawken around midnight, surveillance footage and phone pings have helped investigators piece together a chilling timeline:

  • Weehawken: Seen boarding a local jitney bus for approximately 10 blocks.

  • Route 3/East Rutherford: Video captured Emilio running past a Shell gas station on Route 3, heading toward MetLife Stadium.

  • MetLife Stadium Area: His phone pinged in this vicinity before turning off.

Despite his proximity to the Secaucus Train Station, there is no video evidence suggesting he entered the terminal. His mother, Claudia Gutierrez, believes he may have hitched a ride with a long-haul truck driver at a nearby stop.

Critical Identifiers: What to Look For

Emilio was not carrying his credit cards, charger, or his beloved AirPods. However, he was carrying specific gear:

  • Clothing: A beige hooded sweatshirt with navy blue “Yankees” lettering, gray sweatpants, and black Timberland boots.

  • Gear: Two backpacks. Crucially, one backpack has a black ski helmet attached to it. * Physical Description: 20 years old, athletic build, previously a student at Xavier High School and U-Pitt.

A Battle with Mental Health

Emilio’s disappearance followed a difficult year battling mental health symptoms and a recent manic episode. His family notes that he is currently without his medication and may be in a state of confusion or paranoia.

“He’s a really good kid… his diaries are all about him trying to get better,” his mother shared. The family has searched morgues and missing persons databases across Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and NYC, but the trail remains cold.
