Kyleigh’s Law : Can technology replace teen driver decals?

Parents concerned that license plate decals could result in driving-age children being followed, harassed or worse are hoping technology can provide a less public way of identifying teen drivers to law enforcement. Whether that’s possible yet is another question.

A bill proposed in February by Sens. Jennifer Beck and Christopher Bateman, R-Monmouth, would suspend a provision of Kyleigh’s Law — requiring teen drivers in the Graduated Driver’s License program to display a small red decal on their license plate identifying them to police as GDL drivers — until technology can provide an alternative.  (Higgs, Asbury Park Press)

NJ employers finding it tough to fill job openings

NJ employers finding it tough to fill job openings

Even in a state where the unemployment rate hovers above 9 percent, many employers in New Jersey are finding a difficult time finding the right person to fill a job opening.

Take PSEG, for example, one of the state’s biggest employers, with more than 10,000 workers. When the owner of the state’s largest utility, Public Service Electric & Gas, tracked down how many openings it had, it found it needed to fill 111 positions.

“These are really good jobs,’’ said Ralph Izzo, president and CEO of PSEG, ranging from lawyers, accountants, energy traders, and engineers to skilled craft positions, like auto mechanics, electricians, and pipefitters.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

Law firm revenues recorded historic drop in 2011

Law firm revenues recorded historic drop in 2011

Law firm revenues dropped more in 2011 than any other year over the last three decades, as the pipelines filled with ongoing cases that buoyed lawyers through the recession dried, a New Jersey law expert said.

“Some firms have done acquisitions — and therefore, revenue has gone up on an organic basis — but most of the firms in New Jersey have seen their top line decrease,” said R. Max Crane, managing partner of Sills, Cummis & Gross P.C., in Newark. “We’re all driven by our clients, and our clients are feeling similar or worse pressures on their bottom lines than they did in the recession, so they’re justifying their legal spend more than they have in the past.”  (Eder, NJBIZ)

Shows capitalize on fascination with junk

Toy hunter Jordan Hembroug theridgewoodblog.net

Toy hunter Jordan Hembrough stands in his storage space in Ridgewood, N.J. Toy Hunter premieres on the Travel Channel on Aug. 15. (Travel Channel)

Tracy Hutson wanders through a graveyard of ovens that haven’t roasted a turkey or baked a ham since decades before she was born. Picking through their discarded parts, she muses: “The rust on this is just so gorgeous.”

Her Picker Sisters partner, Tanya McQueen, agrees — yet another item to bargain for, purchase and turn into a high-end piece of furniture on their Lifetime network TV series.

You’ll find a similar pair of women, the Junk Gypsies, doing much the same thing over at HGTV. And these two pairs are not alone.

The list of television shows about hunting for elusive treasure amid mountains of discarded stuff keeps growing like a suburban landfill. At least three new entries are premiering this summer, adding to the already double-digit roster of shows about “pickers” and pawn shop owners and people who bid for the contents of storage containers.

Why, especially when we’re so overloaded with our own clutter and junk, are we so fascinated with the search through other people’s castoffs?

For Unpaid College Loans, Feds Dock Social Security

More retirees are falling behind on student debt, and Uncle Sam is coming after their benefits.

By ANNAMARIA ANDRIOTIS

It’s no secret that falling behind on student loan payments can squash a borrower’s hopes of building savings, buying a home or even finding work. Now, thousands of retirees are learning that defaulting on student-debt can threaten something that used to be untouchable: their Social Security benefits.

According to government data, compiled by the Treasury Department at the request of SmartMoney.com, the federal government is withholding money from a rapidly growing number of Social Security recipients who have fallen behind on federal student loans. From January through August 6, the government reduced the size of roughly 115,000 retirees’ Social Security checks on those grounds. That’s nearly double the pace of the department’s enforcement in 2011; it’s up from around 60,000 cases in all of 2007 and just 6 cases in 2000.

Obama White House told GSA to ‘stand-down’ on Occupy protesters
August 7, 2012

Documents obtained by Judicial Watch confirm that somebody in the White House told officials with the General Services Administration (GSA) to “stand down” and not arrest Occupy Portland protestors who may have broken the law last year.

Former GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Robert Peck told a senior Department of Homeland Security official that the federal housekeeping agency had been instructed by the Obama White House to go easy on the Occupy protestors.

In a Nov. 6, 2011, DHS/National Protection and Programs Directorate Chief of Staff Caitlin Durkovich asked GSA’s Peck if it was true that his agency had asked Federal Protective Service officials not to take action against the Occupy Portland protestors.

Red tape review ‘not as flashy’ as in early days, but still key to business

Though the excitement over Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno’s Red Tape Review Commission has calmed down, leaders of the state’s business groups believe the commission’s efforts are still going strong, as they continue to spot improvements in New Jersey’s regulatory environment.

“The commission really brought common sense back to the regulatory process, and it’s good to have an outside set of eyes continually looking at regulation,” said David Brogan, first vice president of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association.

“There’s the practical benefit to it and the perceptual benefit, and both are very good for business growth. It’s not as flashy as it was when it first started, but it’s still very important.”  (Eder, NJBIZ)

Mayor and Deputy Mayor look to improve the Building Department and its antiquated permitting process

Mayor and Deputy Mayor look to improve the Building Department and its antiquated permitting process
August 7,2012
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

According to the Mayors latest installment of the Mayor’s corner the Building Department and its antiquated permitting process has now become the focus the Mayor Paul Aronsohn and Deputy Mayor Al Pucciarelli .

While the Ridgewood blog has run articles on residents frustration over the permitting process for years ,the building department has managed to whether these complaints and remain unaffected sticking to its tried and true yellow legal pad filing system .

The Mayor reported this week that he and Deputy Mayor Pucciarelli I recently sat down with the village manager and Building Department staff to discuss ways in which we can address the most common complaints: unanswered phone calls, unanswered emails, delayed approvals and a perceived general lack of responsiveness. (https://www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/164847106_Ridgewood_Mayor_s_Corner__A_summer_update.html)

The pair even admitted that “Some of the complaints are valid. Some are not. But one thing is clear – the process needs to be improved as soon as possible.”

The Mayor seemed to get the cue that much of the application/permitting process needs to move online.and in in his own words ,specifically, we are working to provide residents and business owners a way in which to file and track their applications through the Village website. Women for Kyrillos Launches Statewide at Rally in Middlesex

Christine Giordano Hanlon, Esq. Announced As Statewide Chair

Edison, August 6… Today, as a growing number of women across New Jersey put their support behind Joe Kyrillos for U.S. Senate, the official Women for Kyrillos coalition launched statewide at an event in Edison. Women from around the state attended the rally led by Kathleen Donovan, Bergen County Executive. Donovan introduced members of the coalition leadership, including the statewide Chair, Christine Giordano Hanlon, a mother of four and prominent New Jersey attorney, and Senator Kyrillos’ wife, Susan Doctorian Kyrillos.

“It is my pleasure to be here today celebrating the commencement of this important coalition within the Kyrillos for Senate campaign,” said Donovan. “Women have a strong voice in this and all elections, and Senator Kyrillos understands all the important roles women play in making decisions, including for whom to vote. Joe has the tools necessary to put our country back on track and this coalition will make sure that is known to every woman voter come November.”

“Our nation is in economic crisis. From businesswomen to stay-at-home moms, women across our state are suffering from the failed policies of Senator Bob Menendez,” said Hanlon. “With record high unemployment, long-term underemployment, the high cost of gas, goods and services, our families are struggling.

“We must send a leader to Washington who has a clear vision for our future; who understands that more taxes, more regulation and more spending will destroy the economic prosperity that our nation was built on. Joe Kyrillos is that leader.”

Susan Doctorian Kyrillos, wife of Senator Kyrillos, will also take a leadership role in the Women for Kyrillos coalition. “This election is about ensuring a bright future for our children and grandchildren. Joe understands the daily pressures women of all ages face and will be strong voice for all New Jersey women in the U.S. Senate. Throughout his career, Joe has worked tirelessly on behalf of women and our families. He has been an advocate on domestic violence issues, needed education reforms, and keeping our environment clean. Joe has a plan that will get our country back on track, ensuring that every woman, young or old, has the opportunity to be successful.”

“I am so humbled by the growing support I see across the state,” said Senator Joe Kyrillos. “Our message is gaining momentum, and I know that will only strengthen under the leadership of Christine. The presence of strong female leaders like she and Susan will empower more women across the state to get involved, and join our cause to restore the American spirit.”
The Women for Kyrillos launch was held outside the offices of M3 Realty, a residential real estate firm owned by female businesswoman Meiling Kravarik. Kravarik founded M3 Realty in 1989. The company now employs several full and part-time associates and has added a second office in Plainsboro.

Throughout his time as a state Senator, Joe Kyrillos has spearheaded initiatives that aim to strengthen and empower women. There are several components in his newly released jobs plan that aim to do just that. One component provides women with the opportunity to strike a healthy work-life balance by encouraging employers to provide flexible work hours with high advancement opportunities to their female employees. Another component involves funding for women-focused job training programs in fields that are rapidly growing and yet underrepresented by women, like science, technology, and engineering.

Christine Hanlon, the Coalition Chair, lives in Ocean Township with her husband Robert and children ages 5, 7, 10, and 11. She is partner at the law firm of Nelson Supko and Hanlon, and is Republican State Committeewoman for Monmouth County. She has served as the County Coordinator for national, statewide, and local campaigns, including serving as the Monmouth County Christie-Guadagno Campaign Coordinator.
