Principal evaluation mandate will put administrators under microscope

Principal evaluation mandate will put administrators under microscope

As New Jersey schools begin to rethink how they evaluate their teachers, districts are also getting a getting a crash course in assessing an equally important group of employees: school principals.

Fourteen districts have been chosen to participate in a trial run of a principal evaluation system that the state hopes to put in place next fall.

At the same time, New Jersey’s remaining 500-plus districts are being asked to choose the system they will use next year to evaluate their principals.

The effort involved in this task has led to some concern among school leaders, who are already revamping their teacher evaluation systems under the state’s new tenure law. And those jobs don’t include preparing for new testing and curriculum in the coming years as well.   (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)

NJ bank fees often hidden in paperwork, report says

New Jersey’s bank customers face checking account fees that are often buried in long, complicated disclosure statements, a nonprofit research group said Tuesday.

“We believe that any fee a consumer pays without their knowledge is too high,” said Cora Hume, project manager at Pew Charitable Trusts.

In an update of its June report, “Still Risky: An Update on the Safety and Transparency of Checking Accounts,” Pew Charitable Trusts is pushing for banks to adopt simpler disclosure documents.

Several national banks with offices in New Jersey, including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, Citibank, TD Bank and Wells Fargo, have already adopted Pew’s simplified disclosure document for checking accounts.  (Willis, Asbury Park Press)

Like many people, Emily Young used to find e-readers intimidating. “Generally, my kids take the lead on this stuff and I just fumble through,” she said as she arrived at an informal weekly class at the Ridgewood Library on how to use e-readers and tablets.

She brought along her husband’s Kindle, determined not to let digital technology get the best of her. “Like most adults, I’m always hesitant that I’m going to mess something up,” she said.

Whatever their age or comfort level with digital devices, everyone is welcomed at the Ridgewood Library’s e-reader tutorial, which tries to introduce people to the world of e-readers, tablets and digital books.

Council Fails, revised leaf policy bagged

The Ridgewood News

The Ridgewood Council has gone back to the drawing board, defeating previously introduced changes to the municipal leaf removal policy and presenting a new ordinance with fewer changes to the Village Code.

In a “less-is-more” move, council members agreed at Wednesday’s meeting that the former proposal to modify the leaf policy might have done more bad than good for the village and its residents. Mayor Paul Aronsohn said he and his council colleagues made their decision after considering the arguments presented to them last month and over the past two weeks.

“This might be a solution that’s in search of a problem. Maybe we’re already there,” Aronsohn said of the defeated ordinance.

While rejecting the original changes to the policy, the council also introduced a new ordinance during this week’s public meeting. The most noticeable differences in the new ordinance are regulations governing the placement of leaves.

PSE&G advises residents to test their heating systems

PSE&G advises residents to test their heating systems

before chilly weather arrives

(August 13, 2012 – Newark, NJ) –– Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G) is recommending that its gas heating customers test their heating systems now, before the chilly weather arrives.  If there’s a problem, PSE&G will come out to start the unit — at no charge — through September 9, 2012.

“Chilly weather will be here soon, and one of the best things our gas heating customers can do now is to check their system to ensure safe and efficient operation before the colder weather arrives,” said Joe Bassolino, PSE&G’s manager of business development. “By testing their heating systems early, customers will be prepared for the upcoming cold weather. In addition, PSE&G will be able to respond more quickly at this time of the season if there is a problem.”

PSE&G heating customers are advised to first inspect their gas-fired heating systems to ensure the units start and run properly.

How to check your heating system:
Verify that the area surrounding the unit is free of combustible items like boxes, paper, clothing, paint, etc.
Make sure that the flue pipe is connected and in good condition.
If you have a hot water boiler, verify that the indicator on the pressure gauge falls into the normal range (12-15 psi cold).
If you have a steam heating system, check the water level in the sight glass. If it is low, turn on the water supply valve to bring the water level up to the half-way mark. Turn off the valve.
For warm-air furnace systems, check and replace dirty air filters. Verify that the blower door is closed tight and correctly secured.
Verify that all controls, valves, and electrical switches are in the “On” position.
How to start up your heating system:
If the unit is equipped with a pilot, confirm that it’s lit.  If the pilot light is out, follow the instructions on the heating unit to relight it. Let the pilot light burn a few minutes before continuing.
Many heating units use a form of automatic ignition.  Review the starting instructions located on the unit before continuing.
Set each thermostat mode to “heat” (if equipped) and raise the setting five degrees above room temperature. The heating system should start within a minute or two.
Let the unit run a few minutes to ensure it’s operating normally and then return all controls to their previous settings.
If you’re having problems:
Need help lighting the pilot? PSE&G will perform this service free-of-charge through September 09, 2012.  PSE&G will charge $25 for this service from September 10 through October 31.
Not working properly? PSE&G customers can call 1-800-350-PSEG (7734) or go to www.pseg.com to register their account and schedule repair services online for assistance from our appliance service technicians.

The utility also is asking customers to keep their homes and yards safe, well lit, and free of clutter so that our workers can safely access the meters and their equipment. Customers are asked to:

Warn PSE&G workers of any hazardous conditions on your property, such as loose steps or railings.
Make sure the path leading to your meters is clear and properly lit – especially stairways.
Keep dogs and other pets secured away from our workers and service areas.
Keep the area around your furnace, meter and appliances free and clear of clutter. Trim bushes and shrubs in the vicinity of meters located outdoors.

DOE $1.6 billion in stimulus money, safeguards are still not in place in too many places.

DOE follows $1.6 billion in stimulus money…but only so far

When the first round of federal stimulus money was handed out several years ago, New Jersey public schools were scolded by state monitors for not having adequate safeguards in place to ensure that the $1.6 billion was properly spent.

With the money gone and the state’s monitoring completed, the Department of Education this month released the summary findings for the nearly 100 districts getting the bulk of the aid.

Guess what: According to the state at least, safeguards are still not in place in too many places.

In his department’s annual summary of the results of the monitoring sent to all districts last week, state Education Commissioner Chris Cerf wrote that there continues to be a number common failings.   (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)

Homeland Security: Gunmen kill U.S. embassy security chief in Yemen
By Mohammed Ghobari

SANAA | Thu Oct 11, 2012 10:40am EDT

(Reuters) – Masked gunmen shot dead a Yemeni security chief on his way to work at the U.S. embassy in Sanaa on Thursday, in an attack a Yemeni security source said appeared to be the work of al Qaeda.

The incident was the latest of a wave of attacks on officials in the impoverished Arab state, which is battling Islamist militants with Washington’s help.

The attackers, on a motorcycle, opened fire on Qassem Aqlan – who headed an embassy security investigation team – near his house in the centre of Yemen’s capital, the source told Reuters.

“This operation has the fingerprints of al Qaeda which carried out similar operations before,” said the source, who asked not to be named.

Democrats frustrated by Obama’s “Big Bird” campaign turn

Democrats frustrated by Obama’s “Big Bird” campaign turn
By Samuel P. Jacobs
WASHINGTON | Wed Oct 10, 2012 7:43pm EDT

(Reuters) – In 2008, singer will.i.am provided Barack Obama’s presidential campaign with music for its signature anthem, “Yes We Can.” On Tuesday, at a rally for Obama in Columbus, Ohio, the performer chose to play something new: the theme song for “Sesame Street.”

For Obama’s supporters, already dismayed by the president’s halting performance in last week’s debate with Republican Mitt Romney, that change in tune is a new source for concern as they fret that a children’s TV show has become a new backdrop for their candidate’s campaign.

In a moment of tightening polls and climbing anxiety for Obama’s supporters, the president’s decision to grant Big Bird a starring role in his campaign this week has presented another reason to reach for the Alka-Seltzer.

After Romney named Big Bird as part of a promise to pull government funding for public television, Obama’s campaign released a caustic new ad mocking Romney for thinking the character was a “big, yellow menace to our economy.”

Since the debate, Obama has been piling on, joking about Romney’s designs for the TV show at every campaign stop.

Conservatives have been crowing that the silly turn in the campaign diminishes the president.

On 55th Anniversary of Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand More Prominent Than Ever

New movie based on the 1957 novel; new book by Ayn Rand Institute authors hits best-seller lists; Playboy to reprint Rand interview as e-book

IRVINE, Calif.—October 10 marks the 55th anniversary of the publication of Atlas Shrugged, the Ayn Rand masterpiece that sold more than 445,000 copies last year alone. Rand continues to be a pervasive figure in American culture, as politicos and business leaders regularly cite her works and opening weekend approaches for the second installment of the motion picture series based on the novel.

The book by Ayn Rand Institute executive director Yaron Brook and ARI fellow Don Watkins, Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand’s Ideas Can End Big Government, applies Rand’s philosophy to current economic events. The book hit four best-seller lists, including the Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today, and also earned a spot on the Tea Party Patriots’ recommended reading list.

Playboy will republish its 1964 interview with Rand as an Amazon e-book on Oct. 10.

“Millions of individuals have read Rand’s novels, and she has inspired and shaped many people’s thinking,” said Brook. “What’s unique about what’s happening today is that her ideas, and especially herself explicitly, are entering the mainstream debates.”

Ayn Rand’s ideas of limited government and free markets, and her philosophy—particularly her moral philosophy—are what more and more Americans across the political spectrum are looking at more closely,” Brook said.

In addition to Atlas Shrugged, Rand also wrote The Fountainhead, Anthem, and We the Living. ARI’s high school essay contests, which are based on the novels, received more entries this year than ever before, and ARI has distributed more than 2.5 million copies of Rand’s novels to high schools around the country through its Books to Teachers program.

“It is encouraging to see more people talking about Ayn Rand and her ideas,” Brook said. “Even Paul Ryan, who doesn’t agree with all of her ideas, is certainly correct when he says that ‘Ayn Rand, more than anyone else, did a fantastic job of explaining the morality of capitalism, the morality of individualism.’”

Valley Hospital: Message Regarding Meningitis Outbreak

As may know, the media has reported on an outbreak associated with a rare type of meningitis that may have been caused by contaminated steroid injections.

The drug under suspicion is methylprednisolone acetate, and health officials say that all patients were treated with compounded batches produced at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The lot numbers mentioned in the news are for the compounded product and not for individual vials obtained directly from the manufacturer. Neither The Valley Hospital nor The Valley Institute for Pain use compounded steroid products, and neither The Valley Hospital nor The Valley Institute for Pain utilize the compounding Pharmacy mentioned above.
