US Spying ‘Out of Control’: EU Official Questions Trade Negotiations

Senior European Union officials are outraged by revelations that the US spied on EU representations in Washington and New York. Some have called for a suspension of talks on the trans-Atlantic free trade agreement.
Europeans are furious. Revelations that the US intelligence service National Security Agency (NSA) targeted the European Union and several European countries with its far-reaching spying activities have led to angry reactions from several senior EU and German politicians.
“We need more precise information,” said European Parliament President Martin Schulz. “But if it is true, it is a huge scandal. That would mean a huge burden for relations between the EU and the US. We now demand comprehensive information.”
Schulz was reacting to a report in SPIEGEL that the NSA had bugged the EU’s diplomatic representation in Washington and monitored its computer network (full story available on Monday). The EU’s representation to the United Nations in New York was targeted in a similar manner. US intelligence thus had access to EU email traffic and internal documents. The information appears in secret documents obtained by whistleblower Edward Snowden, some of which SPIEGEL has seen.

Hospitals Threaten Obamacare Savings by Exiting Program

Almost a third of 32 hospitals and health systems involved in an experiment aimed at changing the way medical providers are paid may exit the program, a potential threat to the Affordable Care Act’s ambitious cost-saving goals.
Medicare’s “Pioneer” program is designed to save money by more efficiently managing care for patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes and dementia. The providers agreed to a three-year plan to forgo traditional fee-for-service payments, where hospitals charge for every procedure, and instead get a fixed monthly stipend for individual patients.
Begun in January 2012, Pioneer is one of several programs involving 252 providers created under the law to experiment with new payment models. Nine Pioneer members have told the U.S. they may exit, said Brian Cook, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services spokesman. At least four may join other accountable-care programs that carry less financial risk, he said.
Depending on the number of patients involved, “it really shows a critical cost-containment approach in the Affordable Care Act is running into real problems,” said Robert Blendon, a health-policy professor at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, in a telephone interview today.
The experimental programs were set up under the law to save Medicare, the U.S. insurer for the elderly and disabled, as much as $940 million through 2015. Hospitals were projected to gain as much as $1.9 billion in bonus payments under the law.

Charlotte Samuels has a desire to immerse herself in nature, so what better way to do it than attempt to swim 28.5 miles through several rivers?
That is precisely what the 15-year-old Ridgewood High School freshman went for on June 8 when she joined a small group of competitors trying to circumnavigate Manhattan Island in their bathing suits.
The Manhattan Island Marathon Swim is one leg of the Triple Crown of Swimming, along with the English Channel and Catalina (Calif.) Channel crossings, both of which Samuels plans to attack in the near future.
“I started swimming competitively at age 6 with the Ridgewood Breakers, and I liked it a lot,” said the 5-foot-8 Samuels, who continued with the Breakers for nine years before switching over this year to the Bergen Barracudas.
However, pools could not contain Samuels’ desire for further challenges. A friend’s mother mentioned a 1.2-mile swim in the National Harbor portion of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. in 2010, and the young swimmer was hooked by the mystery and challenge.
Americans Less Healthy Than They Think: Study

From beer to cronuts, Americans can’t get enough if our national obesity problem is any indication. But a new study reveals many of us are in denial about our health—and are actually less healthy than we perceive.
In a study commissioned by Aetna, the insurance giant measured everything from how we rank our health compared with other generations—to why some of us exercise at all: To look good in our underwear.
“There is a disconnect,” mused Keri Gans, about the study’s participants. “It’s surprising.”
For example, while 67 percent of people believe they need to lose a median of 25 pounds, another 54 percent believe they can be healthy—even if they’re overweight, the “What’s Your Healthy” study found.
But jokes aside, misinformation can mean serious health consequences. More than a third of adults are classified as obese by the Centers for Disease Control.
“Being healthy is about being at a healthy body weight … the higher their weight goes, the higher their risk increases,” said Gans, also author of the “The Small Change Diet.”

The Emergency Planning Guide is designed to provide residents with basic emergency preparedness information, including tools and checklists that will assist families in preparing for different types of emergencies. It will also help residents to stay informed before, during and after disasters.

Ridgewood Water has simplified water restrictions! The new plan matches odd and even addresses with days of the week to determine which properties can be irrigated.
If your address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays only. If your address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays only. A handheld hose may be used at any time including Mondays.

Court: Gov’t Must Halt Enforcement of Sterilization-Contraception-Abortifacient Mandate Against Hobby Lobby

CNSNews.com) – Following on yesterday’s 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that Hobby Lobby can continue its lawsuit against the Obama administration’s contraception mandate on religious grounds, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma ruled today that the federal government must halt all enforcement of the mandate (and related financial penalties) against the Christian-based company.
Hobby Lobby and sister company Mardel are suing the Department of Health and Human Services and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, arguing that to force the company to pay for health insurance that must offer abortion-inducing drugs, as well as sterilization and contraception, is a violation of its religious liberty.
In his order issued on Friday, U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton said the “court concludes plaintiffs [Hobby Lobby] have made a sufficient showing to warrant the issuance of a temporary restraining order in the circumstances existing here.”
