Hackensack NJ, 2024 saw the most pedestrian deaths since 1986. There were 227 pedestrian deaths in New Jersey. There were 22 cyclist deaths in 2024, the third-highest number in the last 25 years. A 2023 study found that New Jersey has the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the country.


Bergen County is working with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) to improve transportation safety for all road users. Share your thoughts on creating safer streets in Bergen County! Join us at a public workshop to review the draft Local Safety Action Plan and share your input.

  1. Let’s start with enforcing the speed limit . The benefits are a safer village and enhanced revenue from those who ignore the law. Who knows? Enforcement efforts may also reduce our local tax burden.

  2. I agree with Porthnoy, I have rarely seen officers enforcing speed. On the daily I see cars going well above 25 mph on the main roads (E Ridgewood, Maple, Monroe). Case in point, this morning heading towards Rt. 17 on E Ridgewood Ave. past the high school at 7am a car passed me going at a speed I would estimate to be around 40-45 mph. I walk my dog on Monroe and it is a high speed zone approaching the light at W Ridgewood. A car will see the light is green and gun it to try to make the light. Would love to see a car pulled over even once.

  3. I can’t believe we haven’t got the comments yet about people marching into the road while fixated on their cellphones.

How about pedestrians walking in the crosswalks with their head up looking left and right before walking into the road, I constantly see individuals walk right into the road without looking with their head down on the phone if they get hit it’s their responsibility. That’s why I have my camera on my dash recording so if I hit anybody guess what you can’t sue me you walked right into the road without looking it’s on you Heads up. I have already spoken to many legal advisors regarding this he would be on the walkers careless.

      First, if you have enough time to make intimate observations about pedestrian behavior as they’re stepping off curbs, you have ample time not to run them over.

      Second, installing dash cams with the express purpose of recording yourself hitting someone, then consulting “many legal advisors” to assess the extent of your liability in such cases, has got to be the Ridgewood Opa version of a brain dead Biden preemptive pardon.

  5. No drivers stop anymore for pedestrians in the pedestrian crosswalks on Franklin Avenue. Pedestrians have to be very careful!

For pedestrians, take out the ear buds, keep your eyes off of the phone and remember that although you might have a legal right to begin to walk across the street at a legal crosswalk, it is best to relax, and WAIT until there are no cars or SUV’s at least 40 feet from you before you begin to cross. Then look left, right and left again before crossing a street and remember a 2 ton piece of metal should be more of a concern to you rather than your desire to cross a street. This from someone who grew up in NYC in the 1950’s who was skilled and successful at finding a path of only an inch or two between a jaywalking adventure and a car bumper. But that was before the invention of a cell phone which today both pedestrian and driver are now attached to like an umbilical cord. Safety first……

  7. Need more lighting at intersections, but people need to look both ways before walking into the road, I blame parents for not teaching their kids this

  8. Routine speeding around the Village. Try to drive the speed limit and you will be tailgated, given the high beams and more. Plant some police cars not in use around the Village and rotate. Acts as a deterrent because people drive like angels when they see them.
