FAIR LAWN, NJ — After 59 years of mystery, heartache, and unanswered questions, the Fair Lawn Police Department has officially closed the investigation into the 1965 murder of Alys Eberhardt.
In a breakthrough that bridges decades, authorities confirmed that the notorious serial killer Richard Cottingham, often referred to as the “Torso Killer,” has confessed to the brutal slaying of the 18-year-old nursing student.
A Tragedy That Haunted a Community
In 1965, Alys Eberhardt was a vibrant young woman with a bright future in nursing. Her life was tragically cut short inside her own family home, leaving the Fair Lawn community in shock and her family in a state of perpetual grief. For nearly six decades, the case remained one of the most prominent cold cases in Bergen County history.
The turning point came in 2021, when Fair Lawn detectives officially reopened the case. Utilizing modern investigative techniques and fresh interviews, Sgt. Eric Eleshewich and Det. Brian Rypkema spent years chipping away at the silence surrounding the crime.
The Confession of Richard Cottingham
The persistence of the investigators ultimately led to a full confession from Richard Cottingham. Currently serving multiple life sentences for various murders, Cottingham provided investigators with non-public details that only the perpetrator could have known, solidifying the validity of his admission.
“Alys was a vibrant young nursing student who was taken from our community far too soon,” said Chief Joseph Dawicki. “This case is a testament to the dedication of our officers and to the fact that law enforcement never gives up in the pursuit of justice.”
Due to Cottingham’s existing life sentences and the primary goal of providing closure to the Eberhardt family, officials stated that additional charges will not be sought in this specific case.
A Collaborative Effort for Justice
The resolution of this case was made possible through a massive collaborative effort between retired officers, cold case units, and civilian experts. The Fair Lawn Police Department extended special thanks to:
-
The Eberhardt Family for their decades of patience and strength.
-
The New Jersey State Police Cold Case Unit & Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
-
Retired Chiefs Robert Van Houten and Glen Cauwels.
-
Author Dr. Peter Vronsky and the late Jennifer Weiss for their roles in the broader investigation of Cottingham’s crimes.
Never Forgotten
The closure of this case serves as a powerful reminder that time does not diminish the need for justice. Alys Eberhardt’s name is no longer attached to an “unsolved” file; she is remembered as a daughter and student whose memory finally has the peace it deserves.
