The highly anticipated revival of the Broadway hit musical “West Side Story” is drawing up close. The previews began on December 10, 2019, and the official opening is on February 20, 2020. 

It is the fifth revival of the show since its Broadway debut in 1957. Synopsis:

West Side Story is a reimagined version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It takes the enticing story to the west side of northern Manhattan. Where two teenage gangs Jets and Sharks fight to establish their rule. Tony, the friend of Riff Jets leader and an ex-jets member meets Maria, sister of Sharks leader Bernardo in a club. They instantly fall in love with each other ignorant of fate already decided for them. Under the direction of Belgian director Ivo van Hove, this story will unfold itself in the most exciting way possible.

Van Hove is seemingly well-planned for the revival. He took a really bold decision to drop Jerome Robbin’s much-loved choreography for a newer take from the outstanding Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker.

On the list of his plans for the new revival is also cutting two most adored songs. The songs are “I Feel Pretty” and the “Somewhere” ballet.

Van Hove is known for practically striping down classic dramas to their plain requisites. And apparently he the actions he took for the revival necessary. While the cutting of “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere” been controversial. He seems to think the songs took too much time for the musical. The critics and traditional fans of the show are raging made.
