Wyckoff NJ, the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a home on Meadowbrook Road for a reported basement fire. Upon the crews arrival, it was determined to be a fire in the garage of the home. A second alarm assignment was transmitted. The fire was knocked down with minimal extension. Thank you to the mutual aid that responded to the scene or provided coverage.

According to sources the blaze was caused by lithium-ion batteries in an electric scooter.

Lithium batteries have become widely popular due to their high energy density, longer lifespan, and rechargeable capabilities. However, they do come with some potential dangers and require proper care to ensure safety. Here are some important points to consider:

  1. Risk of Fire or Explosion: Lithium batteries contain highly flammable electrolytes and reactive lithium compounds. If they are damaged, short-circuited, or exposed to high temperatures, they can overheat and potentially catch fire or explode. This risk is more prevalent in damaged or poorly manufactured batteries.
  2. Proper Charging: It is crucial to use the correct charger designed for the specific lithium battery chemistry and voltage. Overcharging a lithium battery can lead to overheating and, in extreme cases, cause a fire. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and avoid leaving batteries unattended while charging.
  3. Storage and Transportation: When storing lithium batteries, keep them in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials. Do not store loose batteries where they can come into contact with metal objects such as keys or coins, as this can cause a short circuit. During transportation, ensure batteries are well protected and insulated to prevent damage and short circuits.
  4. Avoid Physical Damage: Lithium batteries should be handled with care to prevent physical damage. Dropping, crushing, or puncturing the battery can lead to internal damage, short circuits, and potential hazards. Damaged batteries should be properly disposed of or recycled.
  5. Temperature Considerations: Extreme temperatures can adversely affect lithium batteries. Avoid exposing them to high temperatures, such as direct sunlight or leaving them in a hot vehicle, as this can accelerate battery degradation and increase the risk of thermal runaway.
  6. Overdischarging: Discharging a lithium battery beyond its safe voltage range can cause irreversible damage and decrease its performance. Many devices have built-in protection circuits to prevent overdischarging, but it’s still important to monitor and avoid excessive discharge.
  7. Proper Disposal: When a lithium battery reaches the end of its life cycle, it should be disposed of properly. Many communities have recycling programs or designated drop-off points for battery recycling. Avoid throwing batteries in regular trash, as they can harm the environment.

In summary, while lithium batteries offer numerous benefits, it’s important to handle them with care and follow safety guidelines. By understanding and mitigating potential risks, you can enjoy the advantages of lithium batteries while ensuring your safety and the protection of the environment.

  1. Liberal Utopia…

  2. Volunteer fire department??? What does that mean? How is this possible? Wyckoff is a very nice town with similar demographics. How many times can we wash our fire trucks in a week paying six figures plus….And to boot, squashing the volunteer EMS. What a racquet. Wake up…

You’re welcome to move to wyckoff.
Those of us long time residents who subsidize you newbies with kids via the bloated school budget appreciate the prompt response time of a professional fire dept to minimize damage vs’saving the foundation’
