from the New Jersey Firefighters PFANJ:

This Day in Fire History – May we never forget.

July 1, 1988 – Hackensack, NJ Ford Dealership Fire
On this day in 1988 a fire at the Hackensack Ford Dealership claimed the lives of five firefighters. After 20 minutes of battling the blaze, firefighters were in a defensive posture in the garage at the rear of the building. Suddenly a 60’ square section of the building’s wood bowstring truss roof collapsed, and an intense fire immediately engulfed the area. Several factors contributed to the tragedy including faults in leadership, lack of training in the roof type, and a communications breakdown.
The Hackensack Ford Fire caused the fire service to begin taking building construction more seriously. Before this fire, building construction was seldom the focus, and bowstring truss were of minimal concern.
