Closter NJ, , Assemblyman Robert J. Auth is warning New Jersey residents that Governor Phil Murphy’s new $58.1 billion budget proposal will hit their wallets hard, leading to higher taxes and increased financial pressure on working families.
Since taking office, Gov. Murphy has increased the state budget by nearly 70%, and this latest plan, according to Auth, is “yet another example of government greed at the expense of taxpayers.”
Sales Tax Expansion Hits Everyday New Jerseyans
One of the most controversial aspects of Murphy’s proposal is a broad expansion of the state’s sales tax. Under the new plan, the sales tax would apply to:
-
Youth and recreational sports
-
Interior design services
-
Digital subscriptions and services
-
Vehicle trade-ins
-
Second-hand aircraft sales
-
Complimentary meals, rooms, and tickets
Even New Jersey’s horse industry and boating community are in the crosshairs, with the elimination of tax relief measures like the partial sales tax exemption and the $20,000 cap on boat sales tax.
Tax Hikes Across the Board
Murphy’s budget also proposes new or increased taxes that will affect:
-
Homeowners selling properties over $1 million
-
Drone hobbyists
-
Beer and wine consumers
-
Law-abiding gun owners
“These tax hikes are simply unaffordable,” said Auth. “With the average property tax bill exceeding $10,000 and many families struggling to make ends meet, this nearly $1.1 billion in new taxes will make everyday life even more expensive.”
A Legacy of Higher Taxes and Mismanagement?
Assemblyman Auth criticized the broader impact of the Murphy administration, citing rising crime, poor school performance, and an influx of illegal immigration alongside ballooning spending.
“The legacy of this administration will be higher taxes, more spending, and fewer results for the people of New Jersey,” Auth said. “Unfortunately, the governor is being helped by Democrat lawmakers in Trenton who continue to push this reckless agenda forward.”

Promises made, promises kept.
Making NJ the California of the east.
November couldn’t come sooner.
You are right Robert Auth. Speaking out now? Where were you the last couple years, as well as your 2 partners (Schepisi and Azzariti)? This is campaign season for you. Hope you learn your lesson.
Taxes will never go down people, if you wanna keep everything maintain and repair that’s what it’s about. Do you wanna go back into the 70s? When everything was crumbling around us think about how many State Bridges have to be repaired or replaced. Think about how old they are And not every single one is controlled by federal government.
NJ is far bigger sh$t hole now
