Ridgewood, NJ – April 2025 — As we head deeper into the school year, Ridgewood High School (RHS) student drivers are reminded that parking rules around the Village must be respected to avoid fines, penalties, and potentially even vehicle towing.

Village Hall Parking Lot Is Off-Limits to Students

Parents, please take a moment to remind your student drivers that the large parking lot behind Ridgewood Village Hall is not available for student parking during school hours. This area is strictly reserved for:

  • Village of Ridgewood employees

  • Ridgewood Public Library staff and patrons

  • Village Hall visitors

  • Residents using Veterans Field and the adjacent walking path and playground

Unauthorized student parking in this area has become an ongoing issue, and enforcement will continue to increase.

Approved Student Parking Areas Near RHS

RHS students may legally park in the following designated areas:

  • Graydon South Lot

  • Graydon Pool Lot

Both lots are accessible via Northern Parkway. Students using the Graydon Pool Lot are strongly encouraged to cross safely via the pedestrian-activated crosswalk at Northern Parkway and Linwood Avenue.

Ongoing Enforcement on Beverly Road: Know Before You Park

The Ridgewood Police Department has been heavily monitoring Beverly Road, where student parking is prohibited between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Despite posted signage, many students continue to park illegally during school hours and are receiving tickets daily.

According to eyewitness reports, officers ticketed more than 20 student-driven vehicles in a single sweep just this week.

Parents should be aware that:

  1. Unpaid parking tickets can result in vehicle registration suspension.

  2. A suspended registration may lead to the vehicle being towed if parked illegally again.

  3. Repeated violations may indicate a need for a conversation at home about personal responsibility, respect for community rules, and safe, lawful driving habits.

Let’s Raise Safe and Responsible Drivers

While getting a driver’s license is a major milestone for teens, it also comes with the responsibility of respecting traffic laws and community ordinances. As adults, we must work together to encourage safe habits, legal compliance, and civic respect in our young drivers.

  1. Should have included a reminder for parents that there is no parking, stopping or standing on N Irving Street at Stevens Field. This area becomes impassable and very dangerous with people loading and unloading, trying to cross, etc. The utility right of way is also misused by parents as a parking lot.

    1. West Ridgewood ave by Ridge is COMPLETLY blocked by double parked cars when school gets out. Driving westbound requires crossing a double yellow line which could cause a head on collission. WHERE IS THE RPD enforcement

  2. Same happens on Warren Pl. Never any enforcement around there.

    1. try to drive past willard or ridge when the helicopter parents double park and block the road. not a cop in sight

  3. “Students using the Graydon Pool Lot are strongly encouraged to cross safely via the pedestrian-activated crosswalk at Northern Parkway and Linwood Avenue”

That’s great but there isn’t one to cross N Irving to get there. Limited visibility when cars are illegally parked on both sides, even in the crosswalk itself.

    1. Hopefully hs students can cross the street.

    2. Yep, think they need to do the following to make it safe for high school students crossing North Irving ..

      A) controlled intersection light
      B) Police presence on both sides of the crossing, need to be there 24×7 just in case students are going to school early or coming home later, same for weekends
      C) Crossing guards, just to be super safe when police might be distracted by using cell phones
      D) Massive speed hump on both sides of crossing
      E) Full time presence of Parking Enforcement Officers to ticket anyone who pauses to drop off or pick up

If the above does not make it safe enough for your overly pampered children then get a VOR ordinance passed closing North Irving down between Northern Parkway and Franklin Avenue

  4. New lights at Vets were a priority over pedestrian safety.

  5. It is a “look the other way” situation. Might get some attention after incidents occur.

    1. fingers crossed!
