Trenton NJ, Steve Sweeney, Democratic candidate for Governor of New Jersey, is calling out Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill for violating federal law by not revealing her stock trading activity and for enriching herself at an astronomical rate while in Congress, an increase in asset value of at least 223% and possibly as high as 560%.
Congresswoman Sherrill was fined for violating the Congressional STOCK (Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge) Act, which bars lawmakers from making stock trades based on non-public information and intelligence afforded to lawmakers as federally elected officeholders, and it requires that they and their family members disclose their trades. As a Member of Congress, she has access to sensitive intelligence briefings not available to the public.
Based on her own financial disclosure filings, the value of Sherrill’s assets have significantly increased since she joined Congress. The most conservative estimate shows that she has tripled the value of her assets over that span, with the highest estimate suggesting her wealth could have reached over $13 million by 2023.
Steve Sweeney has issued the following statement:
“I can’t tell you that Mikie Sherrill went to Congress to get rich, but we know now that is exactly what she did. It’s extremely concerning that a candidate to be New Jersey’s next Governor could continue enriching herself as workers, families, and seniors are struggling. Sherrill has a habit of getting caught doing the wrong thing and failing to take responsibility for her actions, and only backing down once rightly criticized for them. New Jersey doesn’t need a Washington politician who only does the right thing after getting caught helping herself.”
