Paramus NJ, the Archdiocese of Newark has announced that Visitation Academy, a long-standing Catholic elementary school in Paramus, will permanently close its doors at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 academic year due to declining enrollment and financial challenges.
The official closing date is set for June 30, 2025, according to a press release issued by the Archdiocese earlier this week. Aquinas Academy in Livingston will also close on the same date under similar circumstances.
Declining Enrollment and Financial Strain Prompt Closure
The Archdiocese cited a continued decline in student enrollment and mounting financial pressure as key reasons for the decision to close both schools. Despite efforts to sustain operations, the numbers could not justify continued operation.
“We understand this is a difficult time for our school families and staff,” stated the Archdiocese. “We are committed to working closely with them to ensure a smooth transition.”
Support for Families and Faculty
To aid in the transition, the Office of Catholic Schools will:
-
Assist families in identifying alternative Catholic school options
-
Provide tuition assistance to eligible students
-
Help teachers and staff explore opportunities within the Catholic school network
Information sessions will be held during the week of April 28 at both Visitation Academy and Aquinas Academy to offer families guidance and support.
A Legacy of Faith and Education
Founded in 1953, Visitation Academy has served the Paramus community for over 70 years, offering a faith-based education from Pre-K through 8th grade. In 2012, the school earned national recognition with a Blue Ribbon of Excellence award.
The school was part of the Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Newark, which oversees 67 elementary and secondary schools in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties.
Visitation Academy also marked important Catholic milestones, including a prayer service held in honor of Pope Francis’s election in 2013.
Broader Trend in Catholic School Closures
The closure of Visitation Academy and Aquinas Academy is part of a broader trend affecting Catholic education in New Jersey. Other schools such as Montclair Immaculate and Lodi’s Immaculate Conception have also recently shut down due to similar challenges.
What’s Next?
Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend the upcoming information sessions to explore alternative education options and learn about available financial aid.
