Devil’s Path: One of the Most Rugged Trails in the U.S.
Devil’s Path is a 26-mile trail located in the Northern Catskills of New York. It is well-known among outdoor enthusiasts for its grueling ascents, steep drops, and treacherous terrain. The trail allows climbers to summit five of the Catskill High Peaks, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
Outdoor guides and seasoned hikers alike describe it as one of the hardest hikes in the country, requiring both physical endurance and technical skill. In a recent article, the Times Union wrote that Devil’s Path is “renowned for its rugged and forbidding terrain” and attracts those “seeking to test their endurance and skills.”
Rescue and Recovery
The recovery operation involved multiple agencies, including the New York State Police, New York State Forest Rangers, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lexington Fire Company. Emergency teams worked together to reach the remote area where Jin was found, highlighting the challenges posed by the trail even for experienced rescue personnel.
A Reminder to Hike With Caution
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-difficulty trails like Devil’s Path. Even experienced hikers should proceed with extreme caution, ensure they’re physically prepared, and always hike with a partner or group when tackling such demanding routes.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the cause of death, but stress the importance of proper planning, awareness, and respect for the natural elements when hiking in the Catskills.
