Paramus NJ, a school security guard at Midland Elementary School in Paramus accidentally discharged his firearm inside a staff-only bathroom on Monday, according to a letter from Superintendent Sean Adams sent to the community. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
“While we are profoundly relieved that no one was injured, this event is extremely concerning and completely unacceptable,” Adams wrote.
Incident Details
The incident occurred while the guard was inside a single-use restroom designated for staff. The accidental discharge did not harm any students or staff, but raised serious concerns about safety protocols and firearm handling within school facilities.
Immediately following the discharge, Paramus police were notified and began an investigation. The school district is fully cooperating with law enforcement officials, Superintendent Adams confirmed.
Guard Placed on Leave Pending Review
The security guard has been placed on administrative leave, and additional disciplinary action will be reviewed by the Paramus Board of Education during its next scheduled meeting.
“We are committed to understanding exactly how this occurred to prevent this from ever happening again,” Adams added.
