Norwood NJ, a Bergen County man tragically drowned on May 25 while heroically attempting to save two friends whose kayak had overturned in a small lake in the Pocono Mountains.
According to the Pocono Mountain Regional Police, Bibin Michael, 40, of Norwood, NJ, entered the water without a life jacket after seeing two people fall out of their kayak. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. behind homes near Sir Bradford Road in Blakeslee, Pennsylvania.
Michael went under the water during the rescue attempt and never resurfaced. His body was later recovered by a dive team.
Community Mourns a Selfless Leader
Tributes poured in across social media as friends, family, and community members remembered Bibin Michael as a courageous, compassionate man.
“Bibin was more than just a leader; he was a compassionate soul,” wrote Vilas Jambula, a close friend, on Facebook. “His bravery, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to others will never be forgotten.”
Michael was a former nurse manager specializing in kidney care. In 2020, he launched AAA Wealth Builders, a financial advisory firm based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. He was deeply involved in community service and was an active member of the Navakerala Malayali Association, a nonprofit for Indian immigrants from Kerala.
“His final act reflected the life he lived: selfless, brave, and always thinking of others before himself,” the association wrote in a statement.
