West Trenton NJ, a tragic Memorial Day weekend turned deadly on New Jersey roadways, with seven people losing their lives in separate crashes between May 23 and May 27, according to the New Jersey State Police.
The fatalities occurred in seven individual crashes during the peak holiday travel period — from 6 a.m. on May 23 to 5:59 a.m. on May 27 — State Police Sgt. Charles Marchan confirmed in a statement. The number marks an increase from six deadly crashes in 2024 during the same holiday weekend.
State Police Intensify Patrols to Combat Fatal Crashes
To curb such tragedies, New Jersey State Police deployed 170 additional troopers over the extended weekend, focusing on high-traffic areas and cracking down on speeding, distracted driving, DWI, and aggressive behavior behind the wheel.
“The safety of everyone traveling through New Jersey is a top priority for the New Jersey State Police,” said Sgt. Marchan. “Our mission is clear: to protect lives by making our roads as safe as possible.”
Alcohol & Drug Use Remain Leading Factors in Fatal Crashes
While the full details of this year’s crashes have not been released, historical trends paint a concerning picture. In 2024, five out of six deadly Memorial Day crashes involved alcohol or drugs.
State Police urge drivers to plan ahead and avoid impaired driving by using rideshare apps, assigning designated drivers, or staying overnight with friends or family.

Though law enforcement presence increases during holiday periods, Sgt. Marchan emphasized that roadway safety is a year-round mission for state troopers.
