RIVER EDGE, NJ — July 5, 2025 — The River Edge Volunteer Fire Department responded to a working apartment fire early Saturday morning at 84 Rutgers Place, after receiving a report of an oven fire at approximately 6:50 AM.
Upon arrival, Chief 1-0 observed heavy black smoke billowing from the apartment and immediately transmitted a working fire assignment, summoning mutual aid from Battalion 9, Hackensack FAST, and a Paramus Engine.
Aggressive Response Keeps Fire Contained
Initial attack lines were deployed from Engine 2, while a third line from Engine 3 was used to protect the interior stairwell. Truck 21 and Engine 3 conducted primary and secondary searches, which thankfully yielded negative results for any trapped occupants.
Crews launched a fast and aggressive interior attack, successfully knocking down the fire and containing it to the kitchen area. Due to the fire’s intensity and the need for additional manpower, the on-scene assignment was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm.
One Occupant Evaluated; Investigation Ongoing
Holy Name BLS evaluated one occupant on scene. No serious injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
The quick work and coordination between all responding agencies prevented the fire from spreading beyond the kitchen, ensuring the safety of both residents and firefighters.
