MAHWAH, NJ — A Bayonne man working as a delivery subcontractor was arrested after home surveillance footage caught him stealing a package he had just delivered, Mahwah police said.
Braulio Veraportero, 25, was taken into custody last Wednesday and charged with theft following a quick investigation that began when a resident in Mahwah’s Rio Vista development reported her package missing.
How the Package Theft Unfolded
According to Mahwah police, the resident had received a delivery notification and went to retrieve her package, only to find it gone. Upon reviewing her video doorbell surveillance, she saw a man taking the item shortly after dropping it off.
Detective Christopher Fasulo quickly identified a suspect and traced the license plate of the vehicle involved. Surrounding towns were notified, and within hours, the Saddle River Police Department located the vehicle and performed a motor vehicle stop.
Caught Stealing After Delivery
Further investigation revealed that Veraportero was a subcontractor for an online retail service. He allegedly delivered the package, photographed it on the doorstep as proof of delivery, and then removed it.
Veraportero was transported to the Mahwah Police Department, processed, and released pending a Superior Court hearing in Hackensack.
Police Warn Residents to Stay Vigilant
Package thefts, often called “porch pirating,” have been on the rise, especially with the surge of online shopping. Authorities remind residents to:
✅ Install home security cameras or smart doorbells
✅ Track deliveries closely and retrieve packages promptly
✅ Consider secure delivery options like lockboxes or Amazon lockers
