JERSEY CITY, NJ — Thirteen commuters were treated for smoke inhalation on Monday, August 4, after a fire ignited beneath a PATH train at Newport Station during the morning rush hour, officials confirmed.

The incident sent smoke billowing through the station, forcing passengers to evacuate rapidly as flames were spotted beneath one of the train cars.

🔥 What Happened?

  • The fire broke out under a PATH train, filling the station with heavy smoke.

  • Commuters were evacuated as emergency responders arrived on scene.

  • 13 people were treated for smoke inhalation — none with life-threatening injuries.

  • All patients were treated on-site, with no immediate reports of hospitalization.

🚧 Service Disruptions

Due to a loss of third-rail power caused by the smoke condition, trains were temporarily suspended on:

  • Journal Square–33rd Street

  • Hoboken–World Trade Center

PATH briefly cross-honored tickets with local transit providers as crews worked to restore service. Normal operations resumed by late morning, and cross-honoring ended at 11:30 a.m.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused,” PATH said in a service alert.

📹 Commuter Footage

Video circulating on social media showed smoke filling the train cars and bright flames burning beneath the carriage, sparking panic as riders rushed toward the exits.

🔍 What’s Next?

  • PATH and local fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

  • Commuters are advised to monitor the @PATHTrain Twitter account and PATH alerts for any updates.
