WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new chapter in American rail travel begins Thursday, August 28, as Amtrak launches its NextGen Acela high-speed service, connecting Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C. along the busy Northeast Corridor.

The historic rollout will start with five brand-new high-speed trainsets, with the full 28-train fleet entering service by 2027. Passengers can expect 27% more seating per departure, expanded weekday and weekend schedules, and a range of premium amenities designed for today’s travelers.

“NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “We’re setting a new standard for American train travel.”

???? What Passengers Can Expect

  • Faster, Smarter Travel — Seamless booking and seat selection via the Amtrak app, website, or station kiosks.

  • Premium Comfort — Spacious seating, free high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and personal reading lights.

  • More Trains, More Service — Initially five trains in service, ramping up to 28 by 2027.

During the transition, Amtrak will operate both current Acela equipment and the new NextGen Acela trains.

???? Built in America, for America

The NextGen Acela trains were assembled at Alstom’s facility in Hornell, New York by Machinists Union workers, with parts sourced from more than 180 suppliers across 29 states, supporting approximately 15,000 U.S. jobs.

???? Part of a Larger Amtrak Modernization Plan

NextGen Acela is just one piece of Amtrak’s transformation strategy, which also includes:

  • New Amtrak Airo trains debuting on Cascades, Northeast Regional, and other East Coast routes

  • Modern long-distance locomotives with greater efficiency

  • Refreshed interiors for Coaches, Dining Cars, Sleepers, and Sightseer Lounges with new seating, upholstery, lighting, and finishes

Amtrak plans to complete the full NextGen Acela rollout by 2027, enhancing high-speed travel and strengthening the Northeast Corridor as a fast, reliable alternative to air travel.

  1. Sounds good but that route only runs a couple of times a day while NY to Wash DC is once an hour.
