FORT LEE, NJ — A Montclair man was arrested after allegedly hacking into a Fort Lee condominium’s communication system and sending hundreds of residents threatening, hate-filled emails, prosecutors announced.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, Nicholas M. Scarano, 23, was taken into custody on Friday, August 15, just one day after investigators learned of the disturbing incident.
Authorities said Scarano hacked into the Atrium Palace condominium’s online management and communication system during the overnight hours, sending two emails to 411 residents. Each message reportedly contained explicit, bias-driven language targeting Jewish and African American people.
The Cyber Crimes Unit traced the activity back to an internet connection at Scarano’s Montclair residence. After executing a search warrant, investigators determined he used two devices to access the system and send the threatening messages.
Scarano, who previously worked as a Campus Security Supervisor, was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance in Hackensack.
He faces multiple charges, including:
-
Second-degree bias intimidation
-
Third-degree terroristic threats
-
Third-degree false public alarm
-
Third-degree computer criminal activity
Prosecutor Musella emphasized that the charges are accusations and Scarano is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The prosecutor also credited law enforcement agencies across Bergen and Essex counties for their assistance, including Fort Lee Police, Montclair Police, Millburn Police, Paramus Police, and Washington Township Police.
