Jersey City NJ,  – State health officials are urging caution after confirming that a Hudson County resident infected with measles may have exposed riders on NJ Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and PATH trains earlier this month.

The New Jersey Department of Health announced on Aug. 22 that the individual, who contracted the virus after close contact with a non-resident, traveled on multiple train lines between Aug. 13–15, potentially exposing hundreds of commuters.

Possible Measles Exposure Locations and Times

Health officials warn that anyone who traveled during the following windows may have been exposed:

  • NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: 8th Street (Bayonne) to Hoboken on Aug. 13, 14, 15 between 9:00–11:30 a.m. and 6:00–9:00 p.m.

  • 8th Street Light Rail Station, Bayonne: Aug. 13, 14, 15 between 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m.

  • PATH Train (Newark to World Trade Center): Aug. 13, 14, 15 between 9:15–11:45 a.m. and 5:45–8:30 p.m.

  • Exchange Place PATH Station, Jersey City: Aug. 13, 14, 15 during the same travel times above.

What to Watch For: Measles Symptoms

Symptoms of measles typically appear 7–14 days after exposure and include:

  • High fever

  • Cough, runny nose, red eyes

  • Red rash starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body

The rash usually appears 3–5 days after initial symptoms. Health officials urge anyone experiencing these symptoms to call their doctor before visiting an office, urgent care, or hospital to prevent further spread.

Rising Measles Cases in New Jersey and Across the U.S.

This latest case is not connected to the six prior measles cases reported in New Jersey this year. While there have been no official outbreaks (defined as three or more linked cases), isolated exposures have triggered public alerts.

Previous warnings this year were linked to:

  • An Amtrak train

  • Several hospitals and urgent care centers

  • Shopping malls

  • A Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium in May

  • Newark Liberty International Airport last month

Nationally, the CDC has reported nearly 1,400 measles cases in 2025, the highest levels in decades. Experts attribute the resurgence to declining vaccination rates, even though the MMR vaccine is safe and highly effective at preventing the disease.

Health Officials’ Reminder

The NJ Department of Health continues to stress the importance of measles vaccination to protect communities and prevent outbreaks.
