Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood’s Professional Firefighters, FMBA Local 47, are more than first responders — they’re neighbors, family people, and community champions. For this week’s Meet the Members Monday, we spotlight Lieutenant Dave Kelly (Platoon A): a certified fire official, investigator, Level 1 instructor, EMT — and a certified therapy dog handler who helped save a life on duty.

Quick Facts — Lieutenant Dave Kelly (FMBA Local 47)

  • Rank: Lieutenant

  • Platoon: A

  • Certifications & Specialties: Fire Official, Fire Investigator, Level 1 Fire Instructor, EMT

  • Outside Hobbies: Family time, travel, trying new experiences

  • Fun Fact: Certified therapy dog handler; family dog Stanley (9-year-old golden doodle) supports special-needs kids at work

A Call That Changed Everything

One of Lt. Kelly’s most unforgettable calls involved an unconscious woman found at home. The crew arrived, began CPR, and used an AED — working “seamlessly” together. Thanks to their training and teamwork, the patient regained a pulse and, after a long hospital stay, made a full recovery. For Kelly, moments like that reinforce why fire and EMS training matter.

Advice From a Seasoned Firefighter

Thinking about joining a fire department? Lt. Kelly’s top recommendations:

  1. Take entry-level tests often.

  2. Complete Firefighter I & II training as early as possible.

  3. Get EMT certification — it’s the toughest but most valuable credential.

His bottom line: the more certifications you bring to the table before applying, the stronger your candidacy.

The Legacy He Wants to Leave

When Lt. Kelly retires, he hopes to be remembered for improving the department—leaving things better than he found them and contributing positively over the years.
