Glen Rock NJ — Glen Rock police are warning residents after an elderly woman was scammed out of her jewelry in an unusual distraction theft this past weekend.

According to police, the incident happened just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday near Glen and Maple avenues. The victim told officers that she was approached by a woman—described only as possibly being of Arab descent—who claimed the senior reminded her of her deceased mother.

The woman said it was her mother’s birthday and then hugged the victim. While doing so, she placed two necklaces, a bracelet, and two rings on the victim, police said. During this interaction, the suspect secretly removed the victim’s gold necklace and bangle bracelet.

Shortly after, a man joined the woman and slipped a $5 bill into the victim’s pocket before both left the area in a sedan with a young child inside, according to police.

The victim and her son reported the stolen jewelry was valued at over $550, with the necklace and pendant carrying most of the worth.

Police Asking for Witnesses

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to contact:

Community Warning

Police are reminding residents, especially seniors, to be cautious of strangers using emotional stories or physical contact as a distraction tactic. These scams often involve multiple suspects and can happen quickly in public spaces.
