WASHINGTON, D.C. — As Americans gather to celebrate Labor Day 2025, Mark Mix, president of the National Right to Work Committee and the National Right to Work Foundation, is calling on policymakers to honor the nation’s workers not just with festivities, but with concrete protections for their freedom on the job.

“Labor Day should always be about America’s hardworking men and women — the people who power the most prosperous and innovative country in the world,” Mix said. “The best way to honor them is by respecting their rights, especially the Right to Work: the freedom to choose whether or not to join or financially support a union.

Public Opinion Strongly Backs Worker Freedom

According to Mix, surveys show overwhelming support for worker choice:

  • 8 in 10 Americans agree with the Right to Work principle.

  • Polls of unionized workers reveal similar sentiments, with most wanting a free choice.

  • The majority of U.S. workers say they have “no interest at all” in joining a union.

“American workers thrive on freedom,” Mix emphasized. “Policymakers who claim to support them should be prepared to defend those freedoms.”

Rejecting Union Coercion on Labor Day

Mix criticized union officials for using Labor Day to push policies that force workers into unions or require them to pay dues as a condition of employment.

“Union bosses and their political allies, especially under the Biden Administration, tried to expand coercive union power at the expense of workers’ rights,” Mix said. “That agenda sought to strip workers of their ability to say no to union affiliation while compelling them to bankroll union activities, including political spending they may oppose.”

A New Direction After Biden’s Labor Policies

With the 2025 holiday marking the first Labor Day since voters rejected the Biden Administration’s labor agenda, Mix urged a new path forward.

“Now is the time for leaders at every level of government to pursue policies that protect workers’ livelihoods and paychecks from coercive union schemes,” he said. “Labor Day must remain a holiday dedicated to America’s workers — not to union bosses who seek more power over our government and economy.”

The Path Forward

Mix called for state and federal policymakers to:

  • Strengthen Right to Work laws ensuring no worker is forced to pay union dues.

  • Defend employee freedom of choice in union affiliation.

  • Resist efforts by union officials to expand mandatory membership and dues collection.

Conclusion

“Labor Day is about honoring America’s workers,” Mix concluded. “That means defending each worker’s right to decide for themselves whether union affiliation is right for them.”
