SADDLE RIVER, NJ — A Saddle River teenager, charged in connection with a July shooting on Chestnut Ridge Road, has been released from jail following a detention hearing.
Jeremiah Rivera, one of two people arrested after police responded to reports of shots fired outside a borough home, was ordered released on July 17 under strict home detention conditions by Superior Court Judge Anthony Gallina.
Charges Against the Defendants
Police say the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two groups of men outside the Saddle River residence.
-
Jeremiah Rivera: Charged with second-degree eluding, weapons possession, and providing false information to police.
-
Sha’zeik Davis: Charged with first-degree attempted murder and weapons possession.
Conditions of Rivera’s Release
Judge Gallina imposed several conditions on Rivera’s release:
-
No contact with his co-defendant.
-
No possession of weapons.
-
No excessive use of alcohol or drugs.
-
Must attend all court appearances and check in regularly with pre-trial services.
Gallina noted Rivera’s attorney could file a motion to modify detention terms if his client secures employment.
Defense Claims of Self-Defense
Davis’s attorney, Jorge Morales, argued that his client acted in self-defense, claiming Davis believed someone at the scene was reaching for a weapon, allegedly a knife. “He was afraid and very uncomfortable,” Morales stated in court.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Both Rivera and Davis are expected to return to court as the case moves forward. Authorities have not released further information about the groups involved in the shooting.
