Oakland, NJ — A squirrel is being blamed for a utility pole fire in Oakland that left large portions of the borough without power and forced temporary road closures on Saturday, according to the Borough of Oakland Police Department.
What Happened
The fire, which officials say was sparked by a squirrel, caused a utility pole to ignite, triggering a major power outage across the area. Crews from Orange & Rockland Electric quickly responded to assess the damage and begin repairs.
Road Closures & Power Outages
Police confirmed that two roads were closed due to the fire and emergency repair work:
-
Rutgers Dr between Franklin Ave and Princeton Terr
-
Hiawatha Blvd between Calumet Ave and Seneca Ave
While both locations have since reopened, police warned that power restoration efforts may continue into Sunday morning as crews work to safely repair the damage.
Utility Response
Orange & Rockland Electric urged residents in the affected areas to monitor the Outage Map for real-time updates and to direct non-emergency questions about service to their customer hotline at 1-877-434-4100.
Police Statement
The Oakland Police Department thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the outage and advised the public to stay alert for further updates.
